ANNOUNCING THE GRADUATE SCHOOL ASSISTANTSHIP AWARD COMPETITION FOR 2004-2005 (FOR NEW STUDENTS)

Your nominations for a competition for awards for recruiting new students must be delivered to the Graduate School, Room 17, Boyd GSRC by noon on Thursday, February 19, 2004. Based on current funding levels, we anticipate making about 125 new awards for 2004-2005. The number of nominees you recommend can be up to 10 percent of your full-time, fall 2003 departmental enrollment. Students who will enroll in a graduate degree program for the first time, either summer or fall semester, are eligible. However, the award will begin fall semester. Nominate only those students who intend to be full-time, degree-seeking students. Currently enrolled UGA graduate students are not eligible for nomination even if they are applying for the doctoral program. Duties should provide the student with an exceptional research experience and may not include teaching as instructor of record.

Each nomination should be submitted in a folder that must contain the following in order:

Link Link Complete summary sheet. ( Summary Sheet (pdf) or Summary Sheet (doc) )

Link Link A letter from the graduate coordinator detailing the value that the nominee is expected to add to the university institutionally. This letter should provide evidence of characteristics and/or achievements that the department believes will be of special value to its graduate program to UGA. It should detail qualities and characteristics that are not necessarily reflected in GPA and test scores. It may address areas such as work experience, leadership skills, prior accomplishments in the field, multi-cultural perspective, first generation graduate applicant, etc.;

Link Link Undergraduate transcript(s);

Link Link Graduate transcript(s), if applicable;

Link Link Transcript(s) of entrance test scores (GRE, MAT, GMAT, etc.);

Link Link Resumes, vitae, publication summaries, research abstracts, statements of purpose, additional letters of recommendation, etc.

Link Link Agreement form, signed by the Department Head, indicating the Department's commitment to continue to fund the student for the remaining eligibility period until degree completion. Continuation of support is contingent upon documented satisfactory performance and progress toward degree completion. ( Argeement form (pdf) or Argeement form (doc) )

Link NOTE: If you are submitting nominations, we ask that you be involved in the evaluation process.

The assistantship nominations will be reviewed in the Georgia Center Board Room (5th floor) from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday February 25 and Thursday February 26, 2004. Folders may be evaluated at any time during the scheduled periods of these two days. Only departments submitting nominations will be asked to participate in the evaluation process. Participants will not be asked to evaluate nominees from their own departments. Should a graduate coordinator be unable to participate in the review process, he/she has the responsibility to appoint a representative from the department's graduate faculty to serve as an evaluator. In the event a representative from a department fails to appear to evaluate folders, the department's nominations will be removed from consideration.

Our goal is to have the award letters in the mail by March 4, 2004. Awardees will be required to respond to the offer by April 15, 2004.

Please be advised that the noon, February 19, 2004 deadline for receiving nominations will be strictly enforced.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
