Policies and Standards for Academic Progress

The Policies and Standards on Academic Progress explains academic probation and dismissal policies and procedures. Please read these policies and standards carefully and be fully aware of the implications. Any questions regarding the standards should be directed to the student's major department.

Policies

  • Academic dismissal and probation standings are determined by the student's graduate grade point average.
  • If a student changes graduate programs, his/her graduate average will not be restarted.
  • The Graduate School and the Terry College of Business require an average of 3.0 (B) in courses submitted for graduation. Failure to maintain a 3.0 (B) average in all graduate work is considered unsatisfactory progress, and is grounds for dismissal. To be eligible to graduate, a student must earn a 3.0 average on all courses on the program of study and on all graduate courses taken.

Standards/Policies

  • Students may be dismissed by their department or degree program at the end of any semester if they have not made sufficient academic progress.
  • Students with a cumulative graduate course average below 3.0 for two consecutive semesters are placed on academic probation by the Graduate School. They then must make a 3.0 or higher semester graduate average for each succeeding semester that their overall cumulative graduate average is below 3.0. These students are no longer on probation when their cumulative graduate average is 3.0 or above. If they make below a 3.0 semester average while on probation, they are dismissed.
  • Failure to maintain a semester average of 3.0 (B) by a student admitted under provisional status is considered unsatisfactory progress, and is grounds for dismissal.
  • For students in programs lasting over one year, a determination will be made at the end of the end of each year as to their eligibility to continue to the next year of the program. This determination will be made on a case by case basis after reviewing the individual student's coursework, strengths, and weaknesses.

Appeals Procedure

A student who is dismissed by the department or degree program based on unsatisfactory academic progress can petition the Graduate Programs Committee for readmission. A student who is dismissed by the Graduate School will petition the Graduate School directly for readmission.

Implementation

These policies and Standards on Academic Progress were effective with grades earned fall semester, 1998 and thereafter.
