More realistically:
How choose a
"strong" password
- password should be very hard to guess, even
for people who know a lot about you. It should be easy for
you to remember, so you don’t have to write it down
and keep it where unauthorized people might read it (i.e. Post-it notes).
It should not include any words that would be found in any
dictionary in any language because hackers sometimes use
these to run password “cracking” programs.
- passwords must be at least 8 characters in length
- contain 1 or more special characters (!,@,#,$)
- contain no dictionary words.
For tips on selecting a strong password that is difficult to guess and
easy to remember, please see "UGA Password Standard"

How do I remember my new password?
There are memory tricks that can help you remember your password without
writing it down. One method to create an easily remembered password is to
base it upon the first character of a memorable phrase interspersed with
numbers.
Some examples:
-- "I Went Down town To Buy 3 Items."
The password would be 1wdt2b3i
-- "I Pledge Allegiance To the Flag",
with a graduation date (July 5) in the middle and number substitution (1
for I, 8 for A). The password would be 1P875TtF
-- “Fall 06 Is My 5th Year Teaching.”
The password would be F06im5yT

Safeguard Sensitive
Information! |
- DON’T POST IT!
Don’t put sensitive information (including any portion of
SSNs) in areas accessible to the public. This includes Web pages,
your office door, bulletin boards, common areas, etc.
- DON'T KEEP IT!
Sensitive information on your desktop or laptop computers can easily
be stolen. The best solution is to destroy any sensitive data that
is not actively required. If you must keep it, it is much safer
to remove it from your PC and store it on a secure network drive
or back it up to a medium (CD, DVD) that can then be locked away.
- DON'T EMAIL IT!
Email is NOT secure. Don’t use it to send any sensitive personal
information, either about yourself or anyone else.

“Control-Alt-Delete”
when you leave your seat! |
| All Terry faculty and staff should take steps to prohibit unauthorized
access to their computers to prevent a serious threat for exposing or
compromising sensitive data or our network. Press "ctrl"
"alt" "del" simultaneously whenever you are away
from your computer and choose "lock workstation." Type in
your network password to resume work. |
Phishing |
| Phishing is a criminal activity attempting to fraudulently acquire
sensitive information, such as usernames, passwords, ss#'s and credit
card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity. eBay and PayPal
are two of the most targeted companies, and online banks are also common
targets. The e-mail directs the user to go to a Web site where they
are asked to update personal information. In the email, the web site
may look legitimate, however is bogus and set up only to steal the user’s
information. It is relatively simple to make a Web site look like
a legitimate organizations site by mimicking the HTML code; the scam
counts on people being tricked into thinking they were actually being
contacted by whomever. DO NOT RESPOND TO THESE PLOYS! |
