UGA Research Computing Resources
Whenever possible Terry College
researchers should use the OVPR/Research Computing Center for their computing
needs.
Here
is a link to descriptions of availble OVPR/Research Center system resources.
Here
is a link to description of available OVPR/Research Center applications
and software.
Click
here to get a OVPR/Research Center group account (group accounts are
normally assigned to lab heads or project leaders).
Click
here to get a OVPR/Research Center user account (before signing up,
your lab head or project leader must already have an OVPR/Research Center
account).

Business & Economics Research Databases at the UGA Libraries
The UGA Libraries provide access to 50 business and economics research databases.
Below is the link to a subject listing. Platforms include GALILEO, WRDS, or
standalone CD-ROM workstations. Brief annotations describe the databases'
content and coverage dates. Not included in the list are databases freely
available on the Internet, for example, the Census Bureau website, and those
subscribed to by the Terry College.
http://www.libs.uga.edu/researchcentral/subjectguides/bus_econ_research_databases.html
Carefully read the "Access Notes" at the end of the list. Databases
indicated as "GALILEO Search Now" are directly accessible from the
list. Those indicated as "WRDS" require establishment of a WRDS
account at http://wrds.wharton.upenn.edu/ . Those indicated as "CD-ROM"
are for use on standalone workstations not connected to the Internet.
If you need further information about the content of the databases or access
to them, contact John Campbell, Business & Economics Librarian, Main Library,
706-542-0396, jcampbel@uga.edu
Other Research Applications
Other research applications are available on mainframes, workstations and
websites. Below are links to these resources:
Mainframes
- MVS
The MVS system offers compilers (such as C/370, Fortran, or PL/I), packages
(such as SAS, SPSS, BMDP, Lisrel, etc.), utilities (such as ADRDSSU, and
DSDUMP), and miscellaneous batch programs (such as TSOBATCH, and FTP). TSO
handles interactive sessions, while ISPF/PDF provides an interactive, full-screen
environment for writing and debugging both batch and interactive programs,
dataset maintainence, and miscellaneous utilities.
- TSO
TSO is a general-purpose service which allows you to perform tasks in an
interactive environment. Performing tasks in an interactive environment
means that you will be using a terminal, or a microcomputer which functions
as a terminal, to connect to the TSO service. TSO is used to connect to
the MVS packages mentioned in the previous paragraph.
- RPM
Printing from mainframes to a local printer is handled through RPM. To have
RPM setup on your computer contact Patti Orr at 542-0060.
PC Workstations
- C++
is a widely used programming language in professional application development
because of its immense flexibility and power.
- MATLAB
is a tool for doing numerical computations with matrices and vectors.
- SAS
- SAS/IML
is a statistical analysis interactive matrix language.
- SAS/JMP
JMP software dynamically links statistics and graphics allowing users
to interactively explore data, make discoveries and gain knowledge for
better decision making.
- SDC
SDC data on corporate financial transactions and WorldScope company fundamentals
from Thomson Financial. Requires software installed on your workstation
to access their data on the Internet.
- SPSS
Statistical Package for the Social Sciences
Websites
- WRDS
Wharton Research Data Service from The Wharton School of the University
of Pennsylvania
Remote
Access
To remotely access research applicaition on Terry's research server or research
servers at other locations use these tools:
- Secure Shell (SSH)
Secure Shell is a program to log into another computer over a network, to
execute commands in a remote machine, and to move files from one machine
to another. It provides strong authentication and secure communications
over unsecure channels. It is intended as a replacement for telnet, rlogin,
rsh, and rcp.
- X-Windows
- Hummingbird
- Exceed
Exceed is the most secure and popular PC X server in the market.
It allows users to cost-effectively connect the powerful Microsoft
Windows desktops to a wide variety of X Window enabled servers,
and access high-end X applications. Exceed is renowned for its performance,
stability and user-friendliness. Integrated with a powerful terminal
emulation package — HostExplorer® — and the optional
security suite — Connectivity Secure Shell,™ Exceed
is the most versatile Enterprise Connectivity software available.
