A. Using the Instructor’s Computer for Audio/Video Presentations:

  1. Unlock and open the computer cabinet.
  2. Turn the computer on if it is off. You may leave the computer on when you are finished.
  3. Lower the projection screen.
  4. Set the audio/video input source to the instructor’s computer. Switch the Main Computer/Laptop switchbox to “Main Computer”. The Main Computer/Laptop switchbox is located on the bottom shelf inside the computer cabinet. Switch it to the “A” or “Main Computer” position.
  5. Turn the ceiling-mounted projector on with the gray Sharp projector remote. The Sharp remote should be inside the computer cabinet. Point the Sharp remote at the ceiling mounted projector and press the On button. It will take up to 30 seconds for the projector to warm-up to full intensity.
  6. Set the projector’s input source to the computer. Point the Sharp remote at the projector and press the Input button until you see “INPUT 1” displayed in the upper right corner of the screen. Also, switch the Main Computer/Laptop switchbox to “Main Computer”. The Main Computer/Laptop switchbox is located on the bottom shelf inside the computer cabinet. Switch it to the “A” or “Main Computer” position, if it is not already.
  7. Turn the projector off. Point the Sharp remote at the projector and press the Off button twice.
  8. Raise the projection screen.
  9. Put the Sharp remote back into the computer cabinet.
  10. Close and lock the computer cabinet door.

During your presentation you may experience the following audio/video problems:

a. Computer:

Problem: The computer will not come on.
Make sure that the power cable from the computer cabinet is plugged into a power outlet. If the problem persists report it to the TCB Helpdesk located in Sanford 304 or by phone at 542-6799.

b. Sound:

Problem: There is no sound, or the sound is too soft/loud.
One or more volume dials on the amplifier may be turned down/up. The A-506A amplifier is located on the bottom shelf inside the computer cabinet. It has several volume dials. Some of the dials have a labeled mark indicating the recommended volume level. Make sure that the dial labeled “Master Volume” is set at the recommended volume level.

Problem: There is still no sound.
Make sure that the amplifier is on. The A-506A amplifier is located on the bottom shelf inside the computer cabinet. Find the power button on its right side. Above the power button is a red indicator light. If the light is lit, then the amplifier is on. If the light is not lit, then press the power button to turn the amplifier on.

Problem: The amplifier did not come on so there is still no sound.
Make sure that the power cable from the computer cabinet is plugged into a power outlet.

Problem: There is still no sound.
Make sure that the Main Computer/Laptop switchbox is set to “Main Computer”. The Main Computer/Laptop switchbox is located on the bottom shelf inside the computer cabinet. Switch it to the “A” or “Main Computer” position, if it is not already.

Problem: There is still no sound.
Make sure that the computer’s audio is not muted. When the computer’s audio is muted you will see the word “MUTE” on the screen with a symbol that looks like a speaker with a line through it, an icon on the taskbar (bottom of the screen) that looks like a speaker with a red circle and line over it, or both. In this case follow the instructions below.

1. With the mouse right-click on the taskbar icon that looks like a speaker with a red circle and line over it, and select “Open Volume Controls” from the pop-up menu.
2. A new window named Play Control will appear with several volume sliders and mute checkboxes. If the “Play Control” slider is all the way down then move it all the way up, but be ready to adjust the room’s volume on the touch screen control panel. If the checkbox named “Mute all” is checked, then uncheck it.
3. If any of the other sliders are all the way down or mute checkboxes are checked, then try adjusting the sliders or unchecking the checkboxes.
4. Close the Play Control window.
If the problem persists, report it to the TCB Helpdesk located in Sanford 304 or by phone at 542-6799.

c. Projector:

Problem: The projector does not show anything.
Make sure that the projector is on. Point the Sharp remote at the projector and press the On button. If the two lights on the front of the projector are green, then the projector is on. If the projector will not come on, then report this problem to the TCB Helpdesk located in Sanford 304 or by phone at 542-6799.

Problem: The projector still does not show anything.
Make sure that the Main Computer/Laptop switchbox is set to “Main Computer”. The Main Computer/Laptop switchbox is located on the bottom shelf inside the computer cabinet. Switch it to the “A” or “Main Computer” position, if it is not already.

Problem: The projector still does not show anything.
Make sure that the computer is on. If the problem persists, then report this to the TCB Helpdesk located in Sanford 304 or by phone at 542-6799.

Problem: The projector does not show the correct input source or shows only a blank blue image.
Make sure that the correct input source is selected. Point the Sharp remote at the projector and press the Input button until you see “INPUT 1” in the upper right corner of the screen. If the problem persists report it to the TCB Helpdesk located in Sanford 304 or by phone at 542-6799.

Problem: The projector shuts down unexpectedly and without warning.
The projector may have overheated. In this case it will automatically shut down until it cools off. It will take at least five minutes for the projector to cool sufficiently. The projector will automatically come on again once it has finished cooling. If the projector does not come back on after 10 minutes, then the problem is not overheating. The projector’s motherboard might have failed. Report this problem to the TCB Helpdesk located in Sanford 304 or by phone at 542-6799.

Problem: The image on the projection screen is dim or faint.
The bulb in the projector needs to be replaced. Report this problem to the TCB Helpdesk located in Sanford 304 or by phone at 542-6799.

Problem: The image on the projection screen flashes or flickers repeatedly.
A component of the electronics needs to be fixed or replaced. Report this problem to the TCB Helpdesk located in Sanford 304 or by phone at 542-6799.

Problem: The word “LAMP” flashes in a corner of the projection screen for five seconds and then stops.
The bulb in the projector has been in use for 700 or more hours. Report this problem to the TCB Helpdesk located in Sanford 304 or by phone at 542-6799.

Problem: The projector emits smoke or sparks.
The projector has failed and must be replaced. Report this problem to the TCB Helpdesk located in Sanford 304 or by phone at 542-6799.

d. Remote Control:

Problem: The remote isn’t working, or the projector doesn’t respond to the remote.
The batteries in the Sharp remote may be dead. There should be a spare set of batteries in the computer cabinet with which you can replace the old batteries. If there are no spare batteries, report this to the TCB Helpdesk located in Sanford 304 or by phone at 542-6799.

B. Using the VCR for presenting a taped program:

  1. Preview the taped program if it was recorded on any VCR other than those in the TCB classrooms before you attempt to present it to an audience. All the VCRs in the TCB classrooms are the same kind so that they all have the same tracking settings. An outside VCR’s tracking settings may be different. The VCRs in the TCB classrooms will try to automatically adjust to the tape’s tracking setting, but sometimes the VCR may be unable to do this. In this case the taped program will appear jittery, shaky, or unstable. The TCB Helpdesk can preview the taped program for you, or you can do so by going to an unused classroom.
  2. Unlock and open the computer cabinet.
  3. Lower the projection screen.
  4. Turn the ceiling-mounted projector on with the gray Sharp projector remote. The Sharp remote should be inside the computer cabinet. Point the Sharp remote at the ceiling mounted projector and press the On button. It will take up to 30 seconds for the projector to warm-up to full intensity.
  5. Set the projector’s input source to the VCR. Point the Sharp remote at the projector and press the Input button until you see “INPUT 3” displayed in the upper right corner of the screen.
  6. Insert your videocassette into the VCR. The VCR will not play the tape automatically. Do not put non-VHS tapes into the VCR even if you have an adapter.
  7. The basic functions of the VCR are controlled with the buttons on the front panel of the VCR or with the black VCR remote. Press the Play button on the front panel of the VCR or point the VCR remote at the VCR and press the Play button on it to play the tape.
  8. When you have finished with your presentation remove the tape from the VCR. Press the Eject button located on the front of the VCR to retrieve the tape.
  9. Set the projector’s input source to the instructor’s computer. Point the Sharp remote at the projector and press the Input button until you see “INPUT 1” in the upper right corner of the screen.
  10. Turn the projector off. Point the Sharp remote at the projector and press the Off button twice.
  11. Raise the projection screen.
  12. Put the Sharp remote and the VCR remote back into the computer cabinet.
  13. Close and lock the computer cabinet door.


During your presentation you may experience the following audio/video problems:

a. Projector:

Problem: The projector does not come on.
The projector might have been turned off recently and is still in its shutdown cycle. The shutdown cycle lasts up to five minutes. Wait for a few minutes and try again.

Problem: The projector still does not come on.
The batteries in the Sharp remote may be dead. There should be a spare set of batteries in the computer cabinet with which you can replace the old batteries. If there are no spare batteries, report this to the TCB Helpdesk located in Sanford 304 or by phone at 542-6799.

Problem: The projector still does not come on.
Report this problem to the TCB Helpdesk located in Sanford 304 or by phone at 542-6799.

Problem: The projector does not show anything.
Make sure that the tape is playing. Press the Play button again. The digital read-out on the front of the VCR should show a triangle and a counter that is increasing when the tape is playing.

Problem: The projector still does not show anything.
Make sure that the projector is on by pressing the On button. If the two lights on the front of the projector are green, then the projector is on.

Problem: The projector still does not show anything.
Make sure that the power cable from the computer cabinet is plugged into a power outlet.

Problem: The projector still does not show anything.
Make sure that the VCR is on. If the projector still will not come on, then report this problem to the TCB Helpdesk located in Sanford 304 or by phone at 542-6799.

b. Image on Screen:

Problem: The image on the projection screen is jittery, shaky, or unstable.
The tracking on the VCR used to record the program was different from that of the VCR in this room. All the VCRs in TCB classrooms will try to automatically adjust their tracking to match that of the tape. Wait for a minute to give the VCR time to adjust. If the image does not improve, then the VCR is unable to match the tape’s tracking. In this case the tape will have the same problem on all the VCRs in TCB classrooms. You may report this problem to the TCB Helpdesk located in Sanford 304 or by phone at 542-6799.

Problem: The projector does not show the correct input source or shows only a blank blue image.
Make sure that the correct input source is selected. Press the Input button on the Sharp remote until you see “INPUT 3” in the upper right corner of the screen. If the problem persists report it to the TCB Helpdesk located in Sanford 304 or by phone at 542-6799.

Problem: The image on the projection screen is dim or faint.

c. VCR:

Problem: The tape is jammed in the VCR or the VCR breaks the tape.
Do not attempt to remove a jammed or broken tape from the VCR. Report this problem to the TCB Helpdesk located in Sanford 304 or by phone at 542-6799.

d. Sound:

Problem: There is no sound, or the sound is too soft/loud.
One or more volume dials on the amplifier may be turned down/up. The A-506A amplifier is located on the bottom shelf inside the computer cabinet. It has several volume dials. Some of the dials have a labeled mark indicating the recommended volume level. Make sure that the dials labeled “Master Volume” and “VCR” are set at the recommended volume level.

Problem: There is still no sound.

The batteries in the Sharp remote may be dead. There should be a spare set of batteries in the computer cabinet with which you can replace the old batteries. If there are no spare batteries, report this to the TCB Helpdesk located in Sanford 304 or by phone at 542-6799.

C. Using a Laptop for Audio/Video Presentations:

  1. Lower the projection screen
  2. Turn the laptop on.
  3. Turn the ceiling-mounted projector on with the gray Sharp projector remote. The Sharp remote should be inside the computer cabinet. Point the Sharp remote at the ceiling mounted projector and press the On button. It will take up to 30 seconds for the projector to warm-up to full intensity.
  4. Set the audio/video input source to the laptop computer. Switch the Main Computer/Laptop switchbox to “Laptop”. The Main Computer/Laptop switchbox is located on the bottom shelf inside the computer cabinet. Switch it to the “B” or “Laptop” position, if it is not already.
  5. Set the projector’s input source to the instructor’s computer. Point the Sharp remote at the projector and press the Input button until you see “INPUT 1” in the upper right corner of the screen.
  6. Connect the laptop audio and video cables to the laptop. These two cables should be coiled up on the bottom shelf of the computer cabinet. The laptop video cable has a semi-rectangular shaped end with nine pins. It fits onto the alternate video port on the back of the laptop. The alternate video port is also semi-rectangular shaped and has nine pinholes. The laptop audio cable has one round metal pin that fits into the headphone port of the laptop. Connect these two cables to the laptop.
  7. Toggle the laptop’s video display mode if necessary. If the laptop has booted up completely and you do not see anything on the projection screen, then you may need to change the laptop’s video display mode. The three display modes are listed below.

    Laptop Screen Only – The projector receives no video input from the laptop so the projection screen is blank, but the laptop’s monitor looks normal.
    Laptop Screen and Alternate Video – The projector and the laptop’s monitor receive the same input so that you see the same image on the projection screen as on the monitor’s screen.
    Alternate Video Only – The projector receives the video input from the laptop, but the laptop’s monitor does not. The laptop’s monitor screen is blank while the projection screen shows the normal video signal from the laptop.

    All laptops have a key combination that toggles between the display modes. Usually the key combination is [Fn]+[F-key] where [Fn] is the Function key, [F-key] is one of the keys labeled “F1” through “F12”, and + means that you press both keys simultaneously. The appropriate F-key should be labeled with either two symbols that resemble monitors or with the letters “CRT/LCD”. It can take a couple of seconds for the display mode to change so pause before attempting to change the display mode again. You may have to change the display mode two or three times before you find the one you want. Some laptops may only have two of the display modes listed above.

  8. When you are finished with your presentation set the audio/video input source to the instructor’s computer. Switch the Main Computer/Laptop switchbox to “Main Computer”. The Main Computer/Laptop switchbox is located on the bottom shelf inside the computer cabinet. Switch it to the “A” or “Main Computer” position.
  9. Turn the projector off. Point the Sharp remote at the projector and press the Off button twice.
  10. Disconnect the laptop audio and video cables from the laptop, coil them, and place them on the bottom shelf of the computer cabinet.
  11. Raise the projection screen.
  12. Put the Sharp remote back into the computer cabinet.
  13. Close and lock the computer cabinet door.


During your presentation you may experience the following laptop or audio/video problems:

a. Connecting Laptop to Projector

Problem: The projector shows a blank blue image even though Laptop is the selected program source.
Make sure that the laptop video cable is connected as described above. Try changing the laptop’s video display mode again as described above. If the problem persists, report this problem to the TCB Helpdesk located in Sanford 304 or by phone at 542-6799.

Projector:

Problem: The projector does not come on.
The projector might have been turned off recently and is still in its shutdown cycle. The shutdown cycle lasts up to five minutes. Wait for a few minutes and try again.

Problem: The projector still does not come on.
The batteries in the Sharp remote may be dead. There should be a spare set of batteries in the computer cabinet with which you can replace the old batteries. If there are no spare batteries, report this to the TCB Helpdesk located in Sanford 304 or by phone at 542-6799.

Remote Control:

The batteries in the Sharp remote may be dead. There should be a spare set of batteries in the computer cabinet with which you can replace the old batteries. If there are no spare batteries, report this to the TCB Helpdesk located in Sanford 304 or by phone at 542-6799.

D. Using the Lapel Microphone:

  1. Unlock and open the computer cabinet.
  2. Clip the belt pack and microphone to your clothes. The belt pack has a clip on the back for securing the belt pack to a belt or the waist of your clothes. You may also put the belt pack in your pocket. The microphone has a clip for securing it to your collar or lapel.
  3. Turn the microphone on. The belt pack has two switches on top labeled “Power” and “Audio”. Put both of these switches in the On positions. You should see the red light between the switches come on briefly. This indicates a good battery. If the light stays on, then the battery is bad and needs to be replaced.
  4. When you are finished using the microphone always turn it completely off. Put both the Power and Audio switches on the belt pack in the Off position. This will help preserve the battery.
  5. Detach the microphone and belt pack from your clothes, wind the microphone cable around the belt pack, and put them inside the computer cabinet.
  6. Close and lock the computer cabinet.

During your presentation you may experience the following microphone problems:

Sound:

Problem: There is no sound or, the sound is too soft/loud.
The battery in the microphone may be dead. If the red light between the Power and Audio switches on the belt pack stays lit, then the battery is dead and needs to be replaced. There should be a spare set of batteries in the computer cabinet with which you can replace the old batteries. If there are no spare batteries, report this to the TCB Helpdesk located in Sanford 304 or by phone at 542-6799.

Problem: There is still no sound.

Problem: The amplifier is on, the volume dials are set to the recommended levels, and the microphone’s battery is good, but there is still no sound.
The microphone receiver may have been turned off. The microphone receiver is a small black box located inside the computer cabinet under the instructor computer’s CPU. If you do not see any indicator lights lit on it, then it is off. Turn the microphone receiver on by flipping its Power switch. If the problem persists, report it to the TCB Helpdesk located in Sanford 304 or by phone at 542-6799.
