How to remote connect to your computer using Remote Desktop Connection

With Remote Desktop, you can connect to your work computer from home and access all of your programs, files, and network resources as though you were actually sitting in front of your computer at work. In order to remote connect to your office computer, you will need to make sure that you leave the computer turned on. When you leave the computer for the day you should either logoff or restart your computer. This will lock the workstation and leave it at the login screen.

1. Find the IP Address of the computer you want to remote connect to.

2. Enable Remote Desktop Connection on the computer you want to remote connect to.

3. Configuring the remote Configure Remote Desktop Connection on computer you are remote connecting from.

4. How to connect using Windows Remote Desktop Connection

Find the IP Address of your computer

To connect using Remote Desktop, you will need to know the IP Addess of the computer that you want to remote connect to. Follow the steps to find the IP Address of your computer.

From the computer you want to remote connect to.

1. Left-click the Start button in the bottom left hand corner of the screen and then left-click on Run.

2. Type in cmd and then hit enter on the keyboard or left-click OK.

3. Type ipconfig and then press Enter

The IP Address of you machine is listed on the IP Address line. In the example the machine IP Address is 128.192.122.106. Write down the IP address, you will need it later. Keep this number with you at all times because this is how you will reference your machine when you travel.

Enable Remote Desktop Connection

Right-click My Computer, and click Properties. This will open the System Properties window.

On the Remote tab, check the box for Allow users to connect remotely to this computer.

You are done configuring the computer you are remoting to. Now you will need to configure the computer you are remote connecting from.

Connect to another machine using Remote Desktop Connection

Follow these steps to remote connect to your computer using Windows Remote Desktop Connection.

From the computer you are remote connecting from.

1. Click Start ›› Programs ›› Accessories ›› Remote Desktop Connection.
2. If you do not see Remote Desktop Connection under Accessories, Select Connections under Accessories and then click Remote Desktop Connections.

This will launch the Remote Desktop Connection window.

3. Enter the IP Address of the machine you want to remote desktop to and click Connect.

4.You will be prompted for the username and passord of the machine you are connecting to. Enter the username and password and click OK.

5. If connecting to a machine that has the Novell Client installed you will see the Novell login window after the connection is made. Enter your Novell username and password and click OK. You are now connected to the remote computer.

If this is the first time you have remote connected from this computer you may want to make you few setting changes.
1. Click the Options>> button.
2. Select the Experience tab.

3. From the drop down menu for Choose your connection speed to optimize performance, select your connect speed. If you are using a cable or DSL connection select Broadband (128 – 1.5 Mbps)
4. If you want the ability to share files between your local computer and the remote computer select the Local Resources Tab.

5. Click the More button under Local devices and resources.

6. Click the + sign next to Drives. Check the drive letters for the local disk drives you want to share. This will usually be C:

8. Select the General Tab

9. You can save these settings by clicking Save under Connection Settings.
10. Click Connect
