UGAMail FAQ

  • Q: What do you mean by "my email is going to be migrated?"
  • A: The term migration is used to describe what is happening to your mail. Your mail will be migrated or moved from one system to another. In this process, your mail and folders will be configured so that the new system can present your mail to you through the new mail system.

  • Q: How do I know if I will be migrated?
  • A: You will have already received a message from Terry OIT alerting you to this. If you have not received an e-mail or think you may have and deleted it, the users being migrated currently have mail on Ember.

  • Q: What is Ember?
  • A:  Ember is the name of one of the servers Terry uses for receiving and storing e-mail. The other main server used at Terry is TCBNotes. Those using Lotus Notes and TCBNotes will not be migrated at this time.

  • Q: What do I have to do on "Migration day?"
  • A: Depending on the application/client you currently use for viewing your e-mail, you may have to do very little. Documents on how to change minor settings on your computer are available at: UGAMail IMAP client configuration help . You will not have to do any of this until the day of migration. Terry will have staff available on the day of migration to assist you if you are having problems.

  • Q: What do I have to do?
  • A: Again, depending on the application/client you use to view your mail currently, you may just have to change some minor settings on your computer. You will also need to learn how to use the web mail client to configure certain features in your e-mail.

  • Q: How will I read my email?
  • A: You will have multiple ways to read your mail. If you are currently using Netscape or Outlook to read your mail, you can continue to use them. You can also log on to the Web and read your mail from any computer in the world that has access to the World Wide Web and read your mail through webmail available on UGAmail. The address for the webmail link is http://www.ugamail.uga.edu

  • Q: Do I have to use the new system?
  • A: The ability to support e-mail is costly and maintaining multiple mail systems is an inefficient use of Terry College resources. You may use other mail clients and have your mail forward to other mail services such as Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL, or your home e-mail system; however, UGA will not provide support for these systems and we will not be able to troubleshoot issues you may have in sending and receiving work related mail.

  • Q: What about if I use Lotus Notes?
  • A: Lotus Notes users may want to begin migrating to this new system if they are not using the group calendaring feature in Lotus Notes. Currently the group calendaring feature in UGAMail is not available. Once it becomes available we will begin evaluation of the product to ensure it is capable of performing the features needed by these users. Once we make this determination, we will begin the migration of Lotus Notes users. We hope this will be before 2004.

  • Q: What email applications/clients are supported?
  • A: You may read about those here: http://ugamail.uga.edu/imap.html.

  • Q: Can I still receive email as userid@terry.uga.edu?
  • A: Yes, Terry will continue to maintain the @terry attribute You will also be able to receive email at your MyID@uga.edu address.

  • Q: Can I still send email as userid@terry.uga.edu?
  • A: Yes, we will provide instructions on how to do this based on the application/client you are using.

  • Q: Will people sending me email or receiving see any difference?
  • A:  No.

  • Q: Will I have all my email?
  • A: Yes, you may even find folders you forgot you had. Perhaps you hid them or "unsubscribed" to them and they may show up again.

  • Q: Will I keep all my folders?
  • A: Yes, you will have all of your folders from both the Ember system and the UGA system after migration.

  • Q: What about my address book?
  • A: If you use an address book in Netscape or Outlook, you will be able to retain that address book and use it normally because those reside locally on your machine.

  • Q: What will my userid and password be?
  • A: Your username and password for UGAmail will be your UGA MyID and password. This is the same userid and password that you will have recently used to sign up for parking.
