U.S. Senators Warner and Chambliss to speak at Mason Public Leadership Lecture

Athens, Ga. — U.S. Sens. Mark Warner (D-Va.) and Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) will share their views on leadership and public service Jan. 28 at 10:10 a.m. at the University of Georgia Chapel as part of the Terry Leadership Speaker Series Mason Public Leadership Lecture. Warner, who will deliver the lecture, will be introduced by Chambliss and both will participate in the question and answer session following the lecture.

The Mason Public Leadership Lecture is supported by a grant from Keith Mason, a lawyer and alumnus of UGA’s Terry College of Business. It features prominent business leaders who have contributed significantly to their communities or spent time in a public service role.

Both Warner and Chambliss have experience with leadership in business and government. Both senators were original members of the Gang of Six, which later became the Gang of Eight—a bipartisan group of senators working toward a long term solution to the nation’s debt challenges. The Gang has expanded to include 45 members of the Senate and 100 members of the House of Representatives.

Warner was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2008, and serves on the Banking, Budget, Commerce and Intelligence committees. From 2002–2006, he served as Governor of Virginia, where he focused on improving public education and expanding economic opportunity in every region of the state. He co-founded the company that became Nextel. He also made early investments in hundreds of start-up technology companies that have created tens-of-thousands of private sector jobs.

In 2008, Chambliss was elected to serve a second term in the U.S. Senate. Georgia Trend magazine’s 2009 Georgian of the Year, Chambliss was first elected to Congress to represent Georgia’s 8th District in 1994. He is a member of the committees on Armed Services; Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry; and Senate Rules. He also serves on the Senate Special Committee on Aging and as vice chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. Before his election to Congress, Chambliss specialized in representing farmers’ legal interests in South Georgia.

The Terry Leadership Speakers Series is a student-led lecture series presented by the Institute for Leadership Advancement, a privately funded unit in the Terry College.

The next lecture of the series will feature Kevin Marsh, chairman and CEO of SCANA Corp. It takes place Feb. 1 at 10:10 a.m. in room 271 of the Richard B. Russell Building Special Collections Library.
