James Kau receives the Graaskamp Award from the American Real Estate Society

Athens, Ga. – James B. Kau, a longtime professor and real estate journal editor at the University of Georgia's Terry College of Business, was named the recipient of the Graaskamp Award for 2010.

The award is given by the American Real Estate Society, an association of academicians and professionals that is dedicated to producing research related to real estate markets and disseminating that research through the five scholarly journals it publishes.

Kau's award was presented April 15 at the society's annual meeting in Naples, Fla.

The Graaskamp Award recognizes "extraordinary iconoclastic thought or action throughout a person's career in the development of a multi-disciplinary philosophy of real estate," according to the ARES. Specifically, it is given to a person who brings a research perspective that "breaks significantly from what was widely accepted or done previously in the real estate discipline."

Kau was cited for his research advances in the "areas or mortgage valuation and the analysis of the options embedded in mortgages."

As a member of the real estate faculty since 1973, Kau was awarded one of the college's Terry Chairs of Business Administration in 1988. He is the longest-tenured Terry chairholder.

He was the founding editor of the Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics and is now the co-editor with Steven R. Grenadier of Stanford University and C.F. Sirmans of Florida State University. JREFE is published by Springer.
