ARCHIE CARROLL NAMED ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT FELLOW
ATHENS, Ga. — Archie B. Carroll, director of the Non-Profit Management and Community Service Program at the University of Georgia's Terry College of Business, was inducted into the Fellows Group of the Academy of Management August 9 during ceremonies held at the AOM's annual meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Carroll was elected as a fellow from among the AOM's active membership, which is composed of 15,885 management academics and practitioners from 91 nations. The Fellows Group numbers around 160 (approximately 1 percent of membership) and nominees for AOM fellowship must be approved by 60 percent of active fellows.
Roscoe Davis, one of Carroll's Terry colleagues and a former head of the Management department, described induction as a Fellow in the Academy of Management as "the highest level of recognition in our field."
"This award is for one's total contribution to the profession in terms of research, teaching and service, and Dr. Carroll does indeed have a long and distinguished record," said Davis. "It is appropriate the Academy of Management recognize his contributions to the field by inducting him as a Fellow — he has earned such recognition."
Carroll was nominated for fellowship status by Art Bedeian of Louisiana State University, an AOM Fellow and a former AOM president. As stated in its constitution, the purpose of AOM's Fellows Group is to recognize and honor AOM members who have made significant contributions to the science and practice of management, and to provide opportunities for fellowship and a forum for discussion among persons so recognized and honored.
"Your election into the Fellows Group signifies the high esteem in which you and your achievements are held," wrote Kathryn Bartol, Dean of the AOM Fellows Group and a past AOM president, in her letter notifying Carroll of the honor.
Carroll was honored previously by the Academy of Management's SIM division, which presented him with its Sumner Marcus Award for Distinguished Service in 1992. In 1993, the Terry College awarded him its Distinguished Research Award for his 20 years of work in corporate social performance, business ethics, and strategic planning. He was also awarded Terry's Distinguished Service Award in 2003.
Carroll retired July 31 from the Terry College's Department of Management after 33 years service. He also served as department head from 1995 to 2000. He held the college's Robert W. Scherer Chair of Management and Corporate Public Affairs from 1986 until his retirement and is continuing his duties as director of the Non-Profit Management and Community Service Program, a post he has held since 2000.
Now in its 11th year of operation, the Terry College's Non-Profit Management and Community Service program helps develop more effective boards of directors for non-profits through seminars, service, research and consultation. It also connects Terry MBA students with non-profits who are in need of their services and skills, in hopes the experiences will ingrain in the students a participative mindset that will benefit society well into the future.
