BB&T CHAIRMAN AND CEO JOHN ALLISON TO DELIVER INSTITUTE FOR LEADERSHIP ADVANCEMENT EXECUTIVE LECTURE AT UGA

ATHENS, Ga. — John A. Allison, chairman and CEO of BB&T Corp., will present an executive lecture, titled, "Leadership and Values," at 3:30 pm on Tuesday, September 21, in room 101 of the University of Georgia's Student Learning Center.

Allison's lecture, one in a series sponsored by UGA's Terry College of Business and its Institute for Leadership Advancement, is free and open to the public.

BB&T Corp., headquartered in Winston-Salem, N.C., is one of the fastest growing banking companies in the Southeast, with more than $97 billion in assets. Its bank subsidiaries operate more than 1,400 branch offices in the Carolinas, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Georgia, Maryland, Tennessee, Alabama, Indiana, Florida and Washington, D.C. Among banks operating in Georgia, BB&T's market share ranks sixth.

Allison joined BB&T in 1971 and has held a variety of responsibilities. He became president of BB&T in 1987 and was elected chairman and CEO in 1989. The 56-year-old Charlotte, N.C., native graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a business degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1971. He earned an M.B.A. from Duke University in 1974 and graduated from the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University in 1981. He also received an honorary doctorate from East Carolina University in 1995.

He is a member of the American Bankers Association, the Financial Services Roundtable and the Bretton Woods Committee. In addition to membership on the board of trustees of Appalachian State University, Allison serves on the boards of visitors of Wake Forest University's Baptist Medical Center, the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University and the Kenan-Flagler Business School at UNC. He is on the boards of directors for the Financial Clearing House, the Independent College Fund and the Global TransPark Foundation.

The ILA's Executive Leadership Speaker Series seeks to bring established, well-known leaders from a variety of organizations to the Terry College of Business and the University of Georgia. In these student-oriented forums, guest speakers discuss their leadership styles and experience.

The Institute for Leadership Advancement was established in 1998 as a multidisciplinary academic unit within the Terry College. The ILA's purpose is to create and promote cutting-edge knowledge about leadership and use that knowledge to develop leaders who enhance the performance of their organizations and communities. With a variety of opportunities for undergraduate students, graduate students, executives and business organizations, the ILA is one of the most comprehensive leadership development institutes to exist within a university setting anywhere in the country.
