MANUGISTICS PARTNERS WITH UGA'S TERRY COLLEGE OF BUSINESS TO OFFER MBA COURSE ON PRICING AND REVENUE MANAGEMENT
ROCKVILLE, Md. — Manugistics Group Inc. (Nasdaq: MANU), the leading global provider of supply chain management and pricing optimization solutions, has partnered with the University of Georgia's Terry College of Business over the past three years to create a course for its MBA students in the emerging field of pricing and revenue optimization. The class is the only one of its kind in teaching MBA students to focus on revenues, rather than cost cutting, as a means to increase business profits.
Jon Higbie, Senior Manager in Pricing and Revenue Optimization at Manugistics, has worked with Terry College over the past four years to help develop and deliver this innovative class. Says Dr. Higbie, "Some universities have woven this new discipline into their programs as part of traditional classes in Marketing or Operations Research. Very few feature the subject as a stand-alone class. The class has grown substantially over the past three years. It is a win-win for Manugistics and for Terry College as we educate future business leaders about using technology to significantly increase companies revenues, not just reduce costs."
It is a winner too with students, as evidenced by its popularity. Higbie continued, "I am very pleased with the outcome so far, but I have to give credit to Professor Pat McKeown and author Bob Cross. Pat provided the leadership from the UGA side, pulling together resources to make this a reality, and serves as the professor and overall class coordinator. Bob has given a tremendous amount of time and leadership to this effort. He is the undisputed guru of Revenue Management. He's very passionate about the field and is a dynamic speaker."
According to Dr. McKeown, "The class has become one of the hottest topics in the business school despite the fact that it is purely an elective course. We turn students away every year to keep the class at a manageable size." Cross attributes this to the fact that "in this time of economic malaise, students are looking for a differentiating experience so that they can bring greater value to the job market faster. Revenue Management gives them this advantage."
Meeting three full days rather than the traditional three hours per week for 7.5 weeks for 1.5 credit hours, the revenue management class is the only one in the Terry College that combines MBA students from the full-time program on the Athens campus and Evening MBA students from the new program at the Gwinnett University Center.
"Creating a course like this is a prime example of the meaningful connections the Terry College is building with the business community. It shows what business schools can do when they start to think creatively about the unique learning experiences they can give their students," says Dean P. George Benson. "We're so pleased to have Bob Cross as a Distinguished Executive-in-Residence. He brought the concepts and practice of modern revenue management to the Terry College and opened the door to Manugistics for our students."
Pat McKeown is the Department Head and a Professor of Management Information Systems at UGA's Terry College of Business. He is completing his 27th year at UGA and was instrumental in the startup of the MIS Department in 1999 and the Master of Internet Technology Program in 2000. He is the author of close to 50 academic articles and over 30 textbooks in the fields of Management Science and Management Information Systems. His most recent textbooks are in the fields of information system and programming using Visual Basic 6 and Visual Basic .NET. He was a Fulbright Scholar to Portugal in 1998 and was named a Fellow of the Text and Academic Authors Association in 2003.
Bob Cross is the author of the New York Times' Business Best Seller, Revenue Management-Hard-Core Tactics for Market Domination. He has been declared the "Guru of Revenue Management" by the Wall Street Journal. He was the founder of Talus Solutions, a Revenue Management software and services firm which generated hundreds of millions of dollars in incremental revenue for clients such as Delta Air Lines, Marriott International, Ford Motor Company, UPS and many other Fortune 500 companies. Talus was sold to Manugistics in the fall of 2000. He is now serving as a Distinguished Executive-in-Residence for the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia.
