STEVE FORBES TO SPEAK AT UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA

ATHENS, Ga. — Steve Forbes, president and chief executive officer of Forbes and editor-in-chief of Forbes magazine, will speak at the University of Georgia at 1:30 pm November 30 in the Chapel.

The speech is co-sponsored by the Terry College of Business, the political science department, and the Office of the President.

In addition to heading an expanding media empire, Forbes campaigned vigorously for the Republican presidential nomination in both 1996 and 2000, running on a platform that emphasized a flat tax, medical savings accounts, a new Social Security system, parental choice of schools, term limits and a strong national defense.

He also has set forth his ideas for the new millennium in a 1999 book, A New Birth of Freedom.

A New Jersey native, Forbes graduated from Princeton in 1970, where he was the founding editor of Business Today, which became the country's largest magazine published by students for students, with a circulation of 200,000. The magazine continues to be published today by Princeton undergraduates.

Forbes assumed his current position in 1990 and has launched a variety of new publications and businesses since then - including Forbes Global and Forbes FYI. In 1997, Forbes entered the new media arena with the launch of Forbes.com, which now receives an average of four million visits a month.

Forbes is also chairman of the company's American Heritage division, which publishes American Heritage magazine and two quarterlies.

Forbes writes editorials for each issue of Forbes under the heading of "Fact and Comment" and is a widely respected economic prognosticator.

His speech at the university is free and open to the public.
