TERRY SENIOR AMY MULKEY NAMED TO USA TODAY'S ALL-USA COLLEGE ACADEMIC TEAM — ONLY STUDENT SELECTED FROM A GEORGIA COLLEGE

ATHENS, Ga. — Amy Mulkey, a senior in the University of Georgia's Terry College of Business, is one of 105 academically elite students named to the All-USA College Academic Team. USA Today announced its picks in Thursday's edition.

Mulkey, who graduates in May with a major in management information systems (MIS), was named honorable mention on the all-academic team and is the lone student from a Georgia college or university on the list.

The Gainesville, Ga., native was nominated by UGA Honors Program Director Jere Morehead. Mulkey's selection was based in large part on her outstanding work in the classroom and with the Panhellenic Council, where she has been an advocate for standards set for UGA sororities.

"I've been in the Greek system for four years, and I want to see it continue to prosper," Mulkey said. "This is quite an honor and I wasn't expecting it. There are a lot of great leaders here at UGA who make things like this possible for our student body."

This year already was a special one for Mulkey. Last month, she was named the winner of the Miss UGA Pageant. And her work in the classroom hasn't gone unnoticed by her professors, who say they admire how she balances her academics and extracurricular activities.

"She is in my MBA class as an undergraduate student to fulfill her Honors Program requirement," MIS Department Head Patrick McKeown said. "She either had to write an honors thesis or take three MBA-level courses. She is taking my Web development class as one of her three classes. Because she has already had some of the material in that class as an undergraduate, she is working on two Web development projects. For one of the projects, she is among three undergraduates putting together a Web project for a real estate company in Florida. She is a very bright student and nice to have in class. She has a lot of good qualities going for her."

This is the 12th All-USA College Academic team involving four-year universities. The college awards program started in 1990.
