MAJOR GIFTS DIRECTOR FROM DUKE UNIVERSITY JOINS TERRY COLLEGE OF BUSINESS AS ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR EXTERNAL RELATIONS

ATHENS, Ga. — Charles E. Squires has joined the University of Georgia's Terry College of Business as associate dean for external relations. In the newly created position, Squires will manage the offices of alumni relations, development, and communications in the Terry College, said Dean P. George Benson.

Squires most recently served as senior regional major gifts director in the Office of University Development at Duke University. He first joined Duke's development office in 1993 as regional major gifts director. Squires is a graduate of Duke, where he received his bachelor's degree in management science in 1982.

"Charlie has a strong record in major gift fund-raising and alumni relations. He brings a solid plan for how we can encourage more alumni to become involved with their alma mater and help the Terry College build its programs and reputation," Benson said. "We want the Terry College to be considered among the top 10 public business schools in the country. That is an increasingly ambitious goal in a very competitive arena. Private giving and alumni support are essential for us to reach our goal over the next decade."

"Dean Benson and the faculty have clearly articulated the direction of the Terry College of Business and the path for getting there," Squires said. "The more I read and reviewed the college's strategic plan, the more confident I became that the Terry College is poised to dramatically enhance its position as a leader in business education. All across the college, we're trying new programs and reshaping others. Alumni involvement and support are going to be essential to how those programs succeed. We want to continue the process of building relationships that appeal to alumni collectively and interest donors individually."

Squires leads an external relations staff of seven. The Alumni Relations Office is responsible for outreach programs like the Terry Third Thursday speaker series in Atlanta and college-based alumni activities, such as Homecoming and Spring Reunion. The Development Office solicits private and foundation gifts to provide academic support and endow faculty chairs and professorships. The Communications Office publishes Terry alumni magazine, coordinates media relations and manages production of print collateral for the college.

Before returning to his alma mater to work in development, Squires was a registered representative of The Equitable, a financial services company, from 1989 to 1993. He also worked as an administrator for the Grumman Corp. from 1983 to 1989.

Squires and his wife, Lucy, have three children - Sam, 11, Nathaniel, 9, and Lucy, 6.

The Terry College of Business, founded in 1912 as the School of Commerce, has about 45,000 living alumni. The college is consistently ranked among the nation's top 20 public business schools in college guides published by U.S. News and World Report and Business Week.
