The residents of Conoy Township, Penn., recently installed signs on most major town roads carrying the warning: "THIS IS NOT A GUN FREE ZONE,” according to a Fox News report.

The signs are meant to alert would-be criminals that many of the town’s 3,000 residents own guns, although some wonder whether such posting are truly effective deterrents.

For an academic opinion, Fox turned to David Mustard, a professor of economics at Terry who has studied crime.

“My guess is that this may… lead a small number of people to reconsider committing criminal acts, but the signs are unlikely to provide so much new information [about the town] that they result in a large reduction in crime,” Mustard said.
