Credit card theft is nothing new, but new measures taken by Visa and MasterCard regarding security might be making users less safe. That’s what The Home Depot alleges in a recent lawsuit against the credit card companies.
At issue is whether or not credit card companies are preventing the U.S. market from embracing “chip and PIN technology,” according to the Associated Press. To make sense of what that means, they spoke with Craig Piercy, director of the Master of Internet Technology program at the Terry College.
A chip in combination with a PIN is a form of “two-factor authentication,” Piercy said. “It basically means that you have something with you — usually a physical thing — and something that you know. Both together are required to authenticate a user.”
