Websites that list song lyrics can bring in big profits by selling advertisements alongside with their content. The problem that creates for Music Business faculty member and David Lowery, who also leads rock bands Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven, is that these websites too often forgo paying lyrics writers money for their content.
It's another case of artists losing out on revenue, Lowery said. One that consumers may not be aware of.
"The vast majority of these websites seem to have well-established monetization schemes based on advertising," Lowery notes. "Many of the sites appear to have accounts with major online advertising exchanges and prominently feature advertising from major brands.
