Interdisciplinary Certificate in Music Business
2006 AthFest / UGA Music Business Panels
Numerous music business legends lent their insight and years of experience on the University of Georgia campus on September 9th at the first AthFest/UGA Music Business Panels. AthFest, Athens' annual non-profit music and arts festival, partnered with the newly established UGA Terry College of Business' Music Business Certificate Program to allow students and the public to ask professionals questions.
The music business is changing drastically and the various ways current and up-coming bands can pursue a record deal, produce an album, and promote themselves have increased tenfold as technology has increased. An artist or potential business professional can easily become flustered with so many options; it was helpful and insightful to gain advice from the best of the best. Three different topics were discussed: the road to the record deal, current musical technology avenues, and the recording process.
The "Road to the Deal" discussion included: Cass Scripps of Metro Talent; Steve Jones, president of Brash Records; Michael Rothschild of Landslide Records, and Bakari Brock, an entertainment attorney for Kilpatrick Stockton LLP.
The technology portion of the panels included: Ed Douglas, a founder of Mindspring; Pete Dugas, founder and producer of 1320 Records; Kissy Black, a publicist for Lotos Nile; and Dee Dee Murray, a publisher and CEO of Murray Media Music Corp.
And finally, the panels closed with "Recording and the Studio," which included: Jim Hawkins of Electro Acoustics; legendary producer Rodney Mills and Matt Leatherman of Rodney Mills Masterhouse; Glenn Matullo, producer, engineer, and owner of Orphan Studios; and the well-noted producer Jim Barber.
