What is the Music Business Program?

The UGA Music Business Program is a joint venture between the Terry College of Business and the Hodgson School of Music. The purpose of the Program is to develop business leaders for the music industry. By integrating content from a variety of disciplines, the Program will create an intellectual synergy beyond what students can achieve in either the current business or music programs separately. Success in the music business requires a broad array of knowledge from a variety of diverse fields. The UGA Music Business Program draws together these diverse and distinct areas of content into a coherent curriculum, providing students an opportunity that they otherwise would not have.

What are the requirements to complete the Music Business Program?

The Certificate curriculum is designed to provide foundation skills, specialized music business content, and electives to build specific competencies. The Certificate requires 21 hours of coursework to complete the Program.

Foundation Skills Courses include the following:

  • ACCT 2101 Principles of Accounting I
  • MBUS 3000 Fundamental Concepts in Business (non-business majors)
  • MUSI 2060 History of Rock and Roll
  • MUSI 3550 Music Theory for Non-Majors
    Students must complete or demonstrate proficiency, based upon comparable coursework, in all of these courses. For example, a business major would take ACCT 2101, or other comparable courses, in their normal course of study. As such, they would need to take only MUSI 2060 and MUSI 3550 to satisfy the foundation skills requirement. Similarly, a Music Major might take MUSI 2060 and MUSI 3550, or other comparable courses, in their normal course of study. However, they would still need to take ACCT 2101 and MBUS 3000 to satisfy the foundation skills requirement. The determination of what constitutes comparable coursework for the purpose of substituting foundation skills courses will be made by the undergraduate program committees of the host units.

The curriculum will include two mandatory, 3-hour, specialized music business courses. All students in the Certificate Program, regardless of background, must complete these 6 hours. Specialized Music Business Courses include the following:

  • MBUS 4100 Fundamentals of the Music Business
  • MBUS 5100 Emerging Issues in the Music Business

Along with the Foundation Skills and Specialized Music Business courses, students must complete electives. These electives may not count towards the student's major and must be from an area outside of the student's unit. For example, students within the Terry College of Business may not use business courses to satisfy their elective requirements. Similarly, students within the School of Music may not use music courses to satisfy elective requirements. Elective Courses include the following:

  • MUSI 2040 History of Popular Music
  • MUSI 2080 African American Music
  • MUSI 3020 World Music Survey: Africa, Europe, and the Americas
  • MUSI 3021 World Music Survey: Middle East, Asia, and Oceana
  • MUSI 4783 History of Jazz
  • NMIX 2020 Introduction to New Media
  • ECON 2105 Principles of Macroeconomics
  • ECON 2106 Principles of Microeconomics
  • FINA 3000 Financial Management
  • LEGL 2700 Legal and Regulatory Environment of Business
  • MARK 3000 Principles of Marketing
  • MGMT 3000 Organizations and Individuals
  • MIST 2090 Intro. To Information Systems
  • MSIT 3000 Statistical Analysis for Business
  • RMIN 4000 Risk Management & Insurance

In addition to their regular course of study, students are required to complete an externship where they work on site at least 6 hours a week. This opportunity is not only a valuable "real world" experience, but also a great networking opportunity for students to use during their job search. Students are individually placed according to their interests and strengths. This has been an extremely beneficial experience for the students and has also increased awareness of the Program as the students become more visible in the music industry.

The Program is largely based around events which includes, but is not limited to, concerts and panels. Students will be required to participate in all aspects of these events including planning, promoting, executing, and attending

What are the requirements for the UGA Music Business Program?

  • Must be a rising junior at the University of Georgia

How do I register for Music Business classes?

Once you have been accepted to the UGA Music Business Program you may sign up for courses with the MBUS prefix. The UGA Music Business Program requires successful completion of 21 hours of coursework. All courses except MBUS prefix (MBUS 3000, 4100 & 5100) can be taken at any time - no clearance is necessary. This means that you can take other required classes before you enter the Music Business Program.

Do I need to apply for the program even if I only want a minor in Music Business?

All MBUS prefix courses can only be taken after being accepted into the UGA Music Business Program.

Can I major in Music Business?

At this time, the Music Business Program is a certificate program. It is not a major. The Certificate is in addition to your major, and once the certificate requirements are completed this achievement will be reflected on your UGA transcript.

Is there a fee associated with the Program?

There is no additional fee to the UGA tuition.

Do I have to be a musician in order to be in the Program?

You do not have to be a musician to enter the Program. However, we do require an interest in pursuing a career in the music industry to be in the Program.

Do I have to be a music major or a business major to enroll in the Program?

You do not have to be a music or business major. We welcome all majors. The requirements to complete the program may vary depending on your major.

If I am a non-business major how can I sign up for ACCT 2101?

We recommend that you declare a second major as pre-business. This will allow you to register for ACCT 2101 easier and increase the probability of getting into a section of ACCT 2101 that best fits your schedule.

Is it possible to incorporate the Program into a post-baccalaureate degree?

In order to enter the UGA Music Business Program you must be a rising junior at UGA. At this time, the program is not a post-graduate program, and you must be enrolled in UGA to take the classes.

With so many changes taking place in the music industry are there still jobs available?

Absolutely. Jobs are available in the music industry. The UGA Music Business Program provides students with an externship and numerous networking opportunities to help give them a foot in the door to the industry.
