About the Program

David Barbe, Director
The UGA Music Business Certificate Program was established in January 2006 in response to the growth of the music and entertainment industry in Georgia. Music is big business in the state thanks to the myriad of artists and genres represented.
When it comes to diversity in music, Georgia really has it all—the storied Athens rock scene, the wildly successful R&B and Hip-Hop of Atlanta, internationally known country, jazz, and classical artists, in addition to whatever else springs from the creative minds that comprise our music community. As Georgia’s music industry expands, so does the need for for managers, agents, venue operators, technicians, attorneys, accountants, and producers, and other like positions. With the advances in digital technology, the marketplace for our music is international. We are proud to be training the future leaders of this booming international industry.
Our faculty has long-term music industry experience and our students are exposed to all aspects of the music industry—both in the traditional classroom and beyond. Guest lecturers with a variety of backgrounds from all over the country provide our students not only with unique and diverse perspectives, but also invaluable networking opportunities. Every student in the Music Business Program is placed in an internship to gain hands-on, real world experience. This gives them a clear advantage when they enter the job market. We offer local industry internships during the school year, and summer internships in industry hubs like New York, Nashville, Atlanta and Los Angeles.
Now in our 5th year, we are proud of the large number of graduates who are working in nearly every genre and sector of the music industry. Job placement continues to grow as new opportunities arise for our students. As of Fall Semester 2010, we have 100 students enrolled in our Certificate Program, and over 40 in our introductory class that courts new students toward the program. We are truly building momentum at a time when the music industry is moving in exciting new directions.
Private support is an important part of the funding for Music Business and we would not be able to provide our quality program without it. As such, we are very appreciative for the growing support our program continues to receive. We are excited to be part of the future on an industry that is not only thriving, but growing. We hope that you will call upon us if you have any questions or need further information.
