MMR New Student Information
Congratulations on your acceptance to the MMR program! We have put together some information for you that will be helpful as you make plans for the next year.
Before you begin, please read the Graduate School’s New Student To-Do List. Please remember that you will not be able to register for Summer classes until the following are completed:
- Submit immunization forms to UGA Health Services
- Submit final transcript to Graduate School if you are graduating Spring semester
- Return Assistantship Reply and Assistantship Commitment forms to Jamese Meyer (Jamese will be sending you these forms in the mail.)
- International candidates: Submit all documentation to Graduate School for your I20
Housing
You will be receiving an apartment guide in the mail which will help in your search. You may also want to check apartmentfinder.com, apartments.com and rent.com.
About Athens
The Athens Convention and Visitors Bureau website has general information about the city. For information on restaurants, nightlife, concerts (aka the fun stuff), check out flagpole.com. Every year, Flagpole publishes a Guide to Athens that is really helpful for new students looking for a good restaurant/bar/concert. The Red and Black is UGA’s student newspaper.
Parking
Go to Parking Services to apply for a parking permit. Most students this year parked in W04, which is a 4-5 minute walk to your classes. The majority of your classes will be at Caldwell Hall. View Parking Map (PDF | 898 KB)
If you are interested in accessing UGA public transportation, check out the UGA Campus Transit and Athens Transit links.
Student Insurance
As a graduate student receiving an assistantship, all MMR students are required to have health insurance with minimum required benefits. UGA provides subsidized health insurance through Pearce and Pearce. Please note that if you plan on using your own health insurance, you MUST waive out of the UGA Mandatory Plan. Otherwise, you will be charged for the student insurance! Details on the waiver process are available on the Pearce and Pearce website.
International Students
The Office for International Student, Scholar & Immigration Services (ISSIS) is a good resource for international students. It includes help on things like how to obtain a Social Security number, open a bank account, and get a Georgia driver’s license/ID card.
