About Student Representatives
Information technology companies, consulting firms, and companies that strategically employ information systems to advance their industry position are all interested in you, the MIS student. They also are members of the MIS Industry Advisory Board, the MIS Department’s primary mechanism for interacting with the business community to ensure that Georgia’s MIS graduates meet the needs of industry.
The Board works with the MIS department to develop curriculum and courses, award scholarships to outstanding MIS students, speak to classes, and sponsor industry field trips. These companies provide significant insights and contributions to the MIS Department; in return they want access to our students.
You have an opportunity to serve as a Student Representative to the UGA-MIS Industry Advisory Board under the guidance of the Board’s director, Hugh Watson.
As a Student Representative:
- You will work directly with Hugh Watson, assisting him in a variety of Board-related tasks. Student Board members will have one or more projects that they are responsible for.
- You will have the advantage of direct contact with these companies (including upper management and recruiters).
- You will have the benefit of developing both IT and business skills as you help advance the Board, generating new memberships, shaping strategy, and organizing communications.
- You will have a great addition to your resume.
- You will receive a one-year personal membership to the board after you graduate. This will allow you to continue networking with industry professionals and gain access to industry research.
Student Representative Activities
These are some of the activities that you could be involved in. Not all activities will be expected in one semester — a few projects at a time will be emphasized as well as personal interest and aptitude.
- Assist with the Advisory Board meetings
- Pre-meeting: agenda setting and dissemination (standard information emails), RSVP confirmation, name tags, and event coordination (along with the official dept)
- During meeting: take notes, take pictures, greet guests and play host, assist event coordinator
- Post-meeting: compile and organize notes into an easy to read document, put notes and pictures on website, send email to notify members of postings
- Meet with the MIS Industry Advisory Board Director, Hugh Watson (once a week)
- Help develop company contacts
- Develop and manage the website
- Help process the applications for MIS scholarships
- Create ideas to facilitate useful discussion between business and faculty regarding what companies are looking for from an MIS graduate
- Create ideas to facilitate useful discussion between students and faculty regarding what students are looking for from MIS classes and what they want to know to bridge the gap between school and work
- Develop ideas to help forward the mission of the UGA-MIS Industry Advisory Board (e.g., additional advantages to being a corporate member, ways to get appropriate students to the attention of corporate members, ways to get more companies interested in our students, ways to get more students into MIS)
- Develop proposals for faculty to enhance the MIS student’s education: based on having heard the comments in the meeting from both the business community and faculty, write a 1 to 2 pages on the ‘student’ perspective on those comments
- Conduct a formal survey of fellow student’s feedback on certain concepts and/or implementation of new programs (e.g., group work, the compatibility of required courses, the effectiveness of new courses, etc.) in the middle of the semester (or ¾) - when people are not too tired and “over it” to share
