Terry College of Business

Georgia's flagship business school, founded in 1912

Department of Management Information Systems

Campus-wide Computing Facilities

The University's varied computing needs are supported by mainframe and microcomputer facilities, and the campus-wide data network that connects all buildings to state, national, and international computer networks. The IBM mainframe, along with a cluster of IBM work stations, provides multiple operating systems and a wide range of applications software for use by faculty, staff, and students. Central mainframe resources of most interest to students are the libraries' on-line catalog, and Arches, the student computing facility, a good place to learn how to use electronic mail and other applications. Computer Services sites, located throughout the campus, give students access to microcomputers with standard word processing, spreadsheet and graphics software, along with connection to mainframe and departmental resources on a campus-wide data network. Terry College students have ready access to several Computer Services sites.

Terry Computing Facilities

In addition to the computing facilities provided by the University of Georgia, business students have access to several laboratories maintained and operated by the Terry College. These facilities contain business related software, and include an extensive range of executive information systems (EIS), group support systems (GSS), and decision support systems (DSS) software. One room is equipped for experimental and field GSS research. The other room is used extensively for computer-supported presentations by faculty and students.

Cooperative Education

The University of Georgia supports the cooperative education of students from all disciplines. The MIS program has found this to be an excellent way for students to broaden their knowledge of the work place and to mix MIS experience and classroom learning. In a typical co-op arrangement, the student alternates semesters between the Georgia campus and the sponsoring company. A number of Board member companies provide co-op opportunities for MIS students during all semesters of the year. Internship opportunities are also available where the student works only a semester for a company. Board member companies also participate in this program. An MIS faculty member sponsors the student during the co-op or internship semester, and there is an opportunity for the student to earn academic credit for the experience.

Library Resources

The University libraries contain more than 3,000,000 volumes and over 13,000 periodicals. The main library, adjacent to the Terry College, provides MIS students with convenient access to most reference works needed for MIS projects. This facility is augmented by a science library in the Boyd Research Center complex. Each facility has computer-based catalogs, a PC-based reference search service, and terminal access to public databases for further reference searches. Many of the library's computer-based systems can be accessed remotely via Galileo.

Society for Management Information Systems

To extend the classroom experience for MIS majors, a student chapter of the Society for Management Information Systems (SMIS) is active at Georgia. This organization brings practitioners to campus on a regular basis to give SMIS members a current view of MIS practice. It also helps members find employment opportunities after graduation.
