Computing Facilities
The three buildings in which Terry College of Business courses are primarily held—Caldwell Hall, Sanford Hall, and Brooks Hall—are all covered by the campus wireless network (PAWS). For more information, see the PAWS page.
Additionally, Terry College of Business offers two computer-based classrooms which are heavily utilized for specialized MIST course work.
Laptops @ Terry
Many MIST courses require access to an up-to-date laptop for in-class activities as well as for homework. Please check to ensure your laptop meets the recommendations on the Terry College of Business Laptop Recommendations page so that you can be successful in your program.
It is each student’s responsibility to ensure his/her laptop is functioning properly and able to connect to the PAWS network. Laptop support is available from UGA’s TEC Services department (Web: tec.uga.edu, Drop-off Location: UGA Bookstore, Phone: 706–542–3871).
Cooperative Education
The University of Georgia supports the cooperative education of students from all disciplines. The MIS program has found this to be an excellent way for students to broaden their knowledge of the work place and to mix MIS experience and classroom learning. In a typical co-op arrangement, the student alternates semesters between the Georgia campus and the sponsoring company. A number of Board member companies provide co-op opportunities for MIS students during all semesters of the year. Internship opportunities are also available where the student works only a semester for a company. Board member companies also participate in this program. An MIS faculty member sponsors the student during the co-op or internship semester, and there is an opportunity for the student to earn academic credit for the experience.
Library Resources
As of May 2010, the University libraries hold over 4.6 million volumes and 6.6 million microform units as well as subscriptions to over 7,000 print journals. In addition, the libraries provide online access to over 48,000 electronic full-text journals and approximately 400,000 full-text e-books. The main library, adjacent to the Terry College, provides MIS students with convenient access to most reference works needed for MIS projects. This facility is augmented by the Science Library and the Miller Learning Center. Many of the library’s systems can be accessed remotely via Galileo. Students also may submit research questions to librarians via chat or text messaging (see Ask a Librarian for more information).
Society for Management Information Systems
To extend the classroom experience for MIS majors, a student chapter of the Society for Management Information Systems (SMIS) is active at Georgia. This organization brings practitioners to campus on a regular basis to give SMIS members a current view of MIS practice. It also helps members find employment opportunities after graduation.
