About the PhD in Management
The PhD program in management is designed to develop qualified scholars who will excel in research and teaching positions at major universities and colleges. Within the Department of Management, students may specialize in organizational behavior or strategic management. Each student works with an advisor and a committee to create an appropriate academic program. As part of their program, students are expected to be actively involved with faculty mentors in teaching and conducting research leading to professional presentations and publications.
However, please note that the Management Department differs from the general Terry College and Graduate School guidelines in the following manner:
- To be given full consideration of UGA and Terry College funding/assistantships, your application file should be 100% complete by the end of the calendar year (December 31).
- All accepted students will teach a minimum of two courses during their program of study. As such, international students for whom English is a second language must have a 26 or higher TOEFL score. We will consider scores of 24 or 25, but if accepted into the program, the student will need to take and successfully complete remedial English language courses during the first year of study to continue in the PhD program.
- Possessing a Bachelor's or Master's degree from a university in the United States or other country where English is the primary language (e.g., Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, etc.) does not exempt the international student for whom English is a second language from the TOEFL, and, thus he/she must take the TOEFL and include it as part of his/her application.
Prospective applicants can obtain information about the Terry College PhD program, including admission requirements, application deadlines and application materials from the Terry College PhD web site.
Preferences
Strongest preference will be given to PhD program applications who possess a solid foundation in business administration. Please note that a BBA or an MBA degree from an AACSB accredited business school means that you possess this foundation. Applicants possessing a Master's degree are given highest consideration, and in the case of those applying to the strategy program, an MBA is required.
Program of Study
As a PhD student in the Department of Management, you'll be responsible for completing course work in four areas:
- Major field (five courses minimum)
- Minor field (three courses minimum)
- Research Methods and Statistics courses (four courses minimum)
- Research apprenticeship (two semesters minimum)
Major Fields
- Organizational Behavior
- Strategic management
Major Courses
You are required to take the following courses for 4 out of 5 of your major field courses.
- MGMT 9400 Strategic Management Theory (3 hours)
Evolution of major strategic management concepts and theories through in depth discussions of the literatures which built the field's foundations. The benefits and limitations of key authors' contributions will be reviewed from the prospects of research, teaching, and management practice - MGMT 9500 Strategic Management Research (3 hours)
Research in the fields of strategic management, ethics/social responsibility, and entrepreneurship/small business. Includes a discussion of current "cutting edge" literature survey methods, model building and hypothesis generation, research designs, sample and site selection, data gathering methods, and quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques. - MGMT 9810 Seminar in Organizational Behavior (3 hours)
Classic and current theory and empirical research in organizational behavior. Individual differences, perception, job design, groups, leadership, power, motivation, organizational socialization, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, turnover, absenteeism, withdrawal behaviors and individual performance. The course may also include emerging topics in organizational behavior. - MGMT 9820 Contemporary Topics in Organizational Behavior (3 hours)
Contemporary research topics in organizational behavior. An introduction to research areas and streams that are considered emerging and current, not classic, including emotions in the workplace, workplace mentoring, teams, careers, employee engagement to the work context, cynicism, and others.
Minor Field Options
The minor field consists of courses taken outside your major field that provide coherent support for your major field. You can choose a minor field:
- Within other departments in the Terry College of Business: accounting, economics, finance, management science, marketing, MIS, or insurance, legal studies, and real estate.
- Outside the Terry College of Business. Previous PhD students have chosen such disciplines as psychology, computer science, public administration, philosophy, and sociology for their minor field option.
Previous graduate course work may be used to satisfy major field, minor field, and research methodology requirements. However, students must still complete the required minimum hours of course work (exclusive of the first two research methodology courses and nine hours of dissertation work) while in the program. For example, assume the faculty approves that two previous graduate courses fit as your minor field (6 hours). You must then complete two other courses (6 hours) to meet the minimum hour requirement.
Methods / Statistics Courses
During years 1 and 2 of the program of study, students must take courses in research methods, multiple regression, multivariate analyses and structural equation modeling. Students are highly encouraged to take other methods and statistics courses beyond this minimum.
Research Apprenticeship
At least two semesters of a research apprenticeship must be taken as an independent or directed study under the guidance of a major field professor. Apprenticeship work in the Department of Management involves research activities leading to publication.
