PhD Program in Management

Program of Study

As a Ph.D. Student in the Department of Management, you'll be responsible for completing course work in four areas:

Prerequisite Course Work

The Terry College of Business requires two forms of prerequisite course work for students seeking a Ph.D. You may satisfy these requirements through previous undergraduate or graduate course work, or by taking the specified courses during your first quarters in residence.

Program Structure and Duration

The typical Ph.D. student takes five years to complete all degree requirements:

  • Course Work: Course work takes approximately two years to complete.
  • Written Preliminary Examination: Taken after you have finished all course work on your Plan of Study, this examination covers only your Major Field. The exam is offered twice each year.
  • Oral Preliminary Examination: As an immediate follow-up to the Written Preliminary Examination, your Oral will cover the Major Field, Minor Field, and Research Methodology. This examination typically occurs during the same quarter as the Written Preliminary Examination.
  • Dissertation: The typical Ph.D. student in the Department of Management finishes his or her dissertation between 12 to 17 months of completing the Oral. Dissertation proposal guidelines are available. Students should also be aware of modern typographic conventions.
