About the Department of Management
Business has changed dramatically in the past decade. Technology is constantly evolving and customers want their services and goods to be better, faster, and cheaper. As companies downsize to reduce costs, government imposes more regulations on business, and competition grows more global and intense, today’s professional must have a strong grasp of management. The Terry College Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree in management provides students an excellent business education designed to develop their leadership potential in academia and the professional world.
Since the department’s inception in 1963, the Terry College of Business has long recognized that a career in management can offer an unrivaled mixture of enriching challenges, and today’s curriculum is designed for these dynamic times. The primary objective of the management major is to help candidates develop the global perspective, problem-solving skills, and versatile knowledge base needed to manage and lead the modern organization.
Developing leadership begins with cultivating a foundation of essential talents. The undergraduate management major provides students with the professional skills needed to coordinate and manage human, financial, physical, and informational resources to achieve an organization’s goals in the twenty-first century. Courses of study that serve as the foundation of the department’s core curriculum include human resource management, business ethics, organizational behavior, operations management, and strategic management - the last three disciplines also serve as core content for Terry’s highly-regarded, MBA program.
The management faculty has an exceptionally strong research record. A number of faculty are active on journal editorial boards and as contributors have won best paper awards for their published work in Proceedings and Journals. Especially notable is the department’s Strategic Management group that has produced four winners of the National Heizer Award for dissertations in Entrepreneurship.
The impressive scholarship of the faculty translates seamlessly from research to the classroom. The management faculty has received teaching awards at the college, university, and professional level. In the past three years, the management faculty has also published 25 textbooks to support teaching efforts.
Practical application of research and instruction is an inherent part of leadership, and numerous senior faculty members also serve in leadership capacities in major professional organizations. Additional faculty members have steady involvement in a variety of executive development programs designed for major organizations at the state, national, and international level.
The PhD program develops scholars into leading researchers and teachers for major universities and colleges. Candidates who meet the selective admissions criteria may specialize in organizational behavior or strategic management and are expected to be actively involved with faculty mentors in teaching and conducting research leading to professional presentations and publications.
