Certificate in Legal Studies
This certificate program is designed to prepare students for the complex legal environment of business, as well as allow those interested in pursuing law school a chance to gauge their interest in the field.
Program Requirements
The Certificate in Legal Studies requires 15 course hours with a minimum grade of C in those courses. Students are expected to simultaneously satisfy the requirements of the certificate while completing their degree requirements. If courses listed below are used to satisfy degree requirements they may also be used to satisfy certificate requirements. Twelve hours must completed as resident credit. Please refer to the UGA bulletin for pre-requisite courses.
Part I – Required Courses (3 Hours):
- LEGL 2700 / LEGL 2800H Legal and Regulatory Environment of Business
Options for completing the remaining 12 hours:
- Two Courses from Part II and Two Courses from Part III
or - Three Courses from Part II and One Course from Part III

- LEGL 4500 / LEGL 6500 Employment Law
- LEGL 4900 / LEGL 6900 International Legal Transactions for Business
Part III:

- LEGL 4100H Current Issues in Legal Studies
- LEGL 4200 Law and the Entertainment Industry
- LEGL 4300 Law of Business Organizations
- LEGL 4600 / LEGL 6600 Negotiation and Alternative Dispute Resolution Systems
- LEGL 5000 Special Topics in Legal Studies
- MGMT 5440 Business Ethics

Currently enrolled UGA students who have completed LEGL 2700 or LEGL 2800H and have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 are eligible to apply.*
Essay Question
Eligible students must complete the online application which includes the following essay question:
"Why are you applying to the Certificate in Legal Studies program?"
Please describe your motivation, career aspirations or anything else relevant to your interest in the program in 250 words or less.
Notification of acceptance will be emailed approximately 2 weeks after each deadline.
*If you are interested in this program and unable to register for LEGL 2700, email leglinfo@uga.edu for permission. Please include the semester and the call number for which you wish to enroll. Honors students must request LEGL 2800H from the honors department.
