FAQ

What is the Certificate in Personal and Organizational Leadership?
This is a program designed to provide a structured means for students from across the University to learn more about leadership and develop their own leadership skills, while earning University credit towards a certificate.

Do I need a specific major to be eligible for the Certificate Program?
No - the Certificate Program is open to all students across the University.

Do I need any number of hours to qualify for the Program?
Yes - you should be a rising Junior. A good way to test yourself on this is to ask if you are on track to graduate by Spring or Summer in 2 years. Rising Seniors may apply if their schedule allows them to complete all the course work in 1 year, for example 4100 and 5000 are offered in Fall and 5100 in Spring.

Do I need to apply to each program separately?
No, - Scholar and certificate programs have online applications available on each web page. If you meet the criteria, you may apply to both programs simultaneously, but will ultimately be accepted into only one program.

What are the criteria for acceptance?
The Certificate Program is designed to develop and cultivate leadership abilities in students from any major at UGA. Evidence of academic accomplishment is important; thus, students with GPAs below 3.2 will not be considered. Applications unfortunately exceed the number of slots available; therefore, students are chosen based on demonstrated leadership experience, academic achievement, community service, involvement at UGA, and a review of the overall application.

How is the Certificate program different from the Leadership Scholars program?
The main differences are: (1) The LLSP is open only to Terry undergraduates; certificate is open to all UGA undergraduates. (2) The LLSP involves a 2-year commitment and its activities make greater demands on your time; the certificate program can be completed in one year and has no extracurricular demands.

Am I eligible for a Certificate if I have applied to the Leadership Scholars Program?
Yes, by fulfilling the course requirements of the certificate.

What is required to complete the Certificate?
The requirements are outlined on the Undergraduate Certificate home page. Briefly though, there are 3 courses that are mandatory (7 hours total). There is also a menu of elective courses, from which you must take 9 hours; and signing of a commitment contract.

How will the Certificate courses count towards my degree requirements?
This depends upon your major. At a minimum though, all of the courses should count as institutional option electives towards your major. Moreover, if your major requires courses that are on the elective menu, you may apply one such course towards satisfaction of the Certificate's elective requirement.

Is there a fee to enter the certificate program?
No, the cost of the program is underwritten by private donations.
