In addition to innovative classes, the Leadership Certificate Program (L.E.A.D.) offers a number of activities targeted toward developing leadership skills and enhancing the program experience. These include:
Ropes Course
Each class participates in a ropes course on a Fall weekend at UGA as part of ILAD 4100
ILA Speaker Series
Certificate students are invited to the Terry Leadership Speaker Series which features distinguished leaders from a variety of organizations. Speaker panels are also a regular feature of Certificate classes. This interaction is highly beneficial as students are able to see living examples of class learning and leadership in action.
Community Service Students in the Certificate Program are involved in meaningful community service projects both individually and in class. Class projects include challenging groups of 5-6 students to create and implement an influential semester-long community service activity. For example, during the Fall Semester Leadership Certificate students in Vikki Clawson's class helped Project Safe, a local non-profit organization that provides shelter and support for women and their children who are victims of domestic violence, to implement a cell phone collection program throughout the Athens area. During the Spring semester the Certificate Class Officers organized students to volunteer as a group to help build the World of Wonder Playground. This project is the largest community playground built in Georgia.
Orientation and Graduation Receptions
L.E.A.D. holds an annual Orientation for incoming students each Fall Semester. This session is a chance for classmates to learn more about the program, elect officers, and get to know one another. At the end of the Fall and Spring Semester, the program also sponsors a Graduation and Reception open to all Certificate students. This event is for all students to have a chance to get together and celebrate those graduating and get to know better those still in the program.
