We integrate service learning throughout our curriculum. By "service learning," we mean academically grounded community service that allows students to apply the leadership principles and practices they examine in class and develop as community citizens. We tell them that to whom much is given, much is required. Service learning helps communicate this value and reinforce our servant-leadership culture.
Capstone Service Learning Project (CSLP) in ILAD5100

The CSLP is emblematic of our service-learning effort. Its purpose is designed to provide senior leadership scholars with an experience that draws on all of the knowledge and skills they acquire during their time in the program. Think of the CSLP as a consulting assignment with a community or non-profit organization, in which real needs are addressed and real problems are solved. The project begins in late August as a component of ILAD 5100. Students are organized in teams and assigned to a client. Research and planning is carried out in the fall and implementation in the spring. CSLPs are not restricted to the Athens area and have been carried out in Columbus, Ellijay, Macon and Moultrie. Download the CSLP brochure for prospective clients or review the list of past clients.
Service Learning in ILAD4100

In ILAD 4100, students are required to implement an activity for the benefit of an Athens-area school or non-profit organization. Students are assigned to teams and each team is challenged to propose its own project, which is to be completed by the end of the semester. See list of past agencies served in ILAD4100.
Youth Leadership Athens

YLA is a local volunteer civic organization that provides a leadership development experience for select area high-school juniors. First-year Leonard Scholars conduct the business session for the YLA program. In addition, CSLP teams have advised the YLA board on curriculum revisions, new marketing initiatives, changes in the selection process, and service-learning opportunities.
Senior Service Retreat

Leonard Scholars routinely participate in other group community service projects during their time in the program. Examples include providing gifts for needy families during the holidays, clearing greenway trails at Sandy Creek Park, supporting watchdawgs, (a safe late-night transit option for students), and organizing donated food for the Athens Food Bank. Beginning with the 2007 class, senior Leonard Scholars have traveled to New Orleans to assist in the Katrina recovery effort gutting, cleaning, and rebuilding local homes.
