Leonard Summer Scholarships Report and Other Pursuits - 2005

This summer, Class of 2006 scholars worked, studied, and volunteered all across the country and the globe. The four recipients of the Leonard Scholarship represented the LLSP on four continents: North America, South America, Europe, and Asia.
Alex Bunn, (Marketing) who is noted for his commitment to health advocacy on the UGA campus, interned for COMCARE Alliance in Washington DC, a company that uses information technology to streamline the emergency response industry. The highlight for Alex was the opportunity to organize a large-scale fundraiser on Capitol Hill.
Over a period of 8 weeks, Joseph Antonio (Accounting) participated in a Cross Cultural Solutions program in Ayacucho and Lima, Peru. His work was aimed at providing educational and recreational activities for children in one of Lima's poorest communities, teaching English courses at an all-girls school, coaching basketball, and reaching out to the local inmate population.
Evan Pellegrino (Accounting) spent his summer studying at the Istituto Filipin, a private Italian boarding school, in Paderno del Grappa, and found Italy quite a unique experience, as he learned just how the cultural differences of our two nations spread throughout business.
In pursuing his degree in Chinese Studies, Evan Randall (Risk Management/Insurance) enrolled in Columbia University's full-immersion language program at Peking University in Beijing. Though his time in Beijing was devoted entirely to language training, Evan was also able to visit Tibet for 10 days, including a variety of sites from Patola Palace in Lhasa to Everest Base Camp.
Other Leadership Scholars held internships in a variety of firms, from Wall Street to Atlanta.
In New York, Chloe Thompson (International Business) worked with JP Morgan Chase as a fixed income analyst, where weekly she created and presented financial research for investors and her team.
Liz Pace (Finance) worked for UBS Financial Services Private Wealth Management Branch, where she created client databases, put together mutual fund research binders, and generated explanatory organizational statements for private clients.
Drew Fulton (Finance)worked for Lehman Brothers Investment Group, participating in build versus buy negotiations for a project to be implemented this fall.
In Washington DC, Brad Odom (Finance) held a position with King & Spalding's governmental affairs practice. Through research and projects, Brad learned more about the legal profession and politics on Capitol Hill.
Also in DC, Kathleen McNicholas (Internat'l Business/Internat'l Affairs) interned with Coca-Cola.
In Cincinnati, Josh Kinnebrew (Management) was a member of a pricing team for global services, a team created to identify cost savings opportunities in various business units through developing tools for data analysis and decision making.
Based in Philadelphia, Ashley Rudolph (Marketing) worked with P&G's North American Sales and Marketing department. Her primary responsibilities included developing marketing campaigns and conducting sales and marketing research, and afforded her the opportunity to travel to Las Vegas, Sacramento, and Los Angeles.
In Greenville SC, Kelly Mattox (Accounting) worked for Elliot Davis' auditing department, where she was responsible for performing audit test work and financial statement audits, covering a variety of clients from banks to manufacturing firms. This experience exposed Kelly to lesser known industries and the intricacies of small business.
In the Atlanta area, Andrew Dill (Risk Management/Insurance) worked with the Sales and Marketing department of Philip Morris USA, learning the lesson that self-motivation is required in sales.
Charles Hicks (Marketing) interned with the Gwinnett County Public School System's Risk Management Department. In his position, he handled claims and presented risk reduction projects, inspired by his own analysis of the school systems exposures and liabilities.
At Trimont Real Estate Advisors, Ben Bullock (Real Estate)served as an analyst for real estate deals with varying capital structures, exposing him to the complexities of this facet of asset management.
David Carswell (Management) took part in Walgreen's Business Management Intern program, which rotated him through a variety of functional training. When given the opportunity to manage a store, David applied the principles taught through his leadership course work to manager/employee and customer relations.
Matt Tisdel (Accounting) worked for Ernst and Young's Federal Tax Consulting services practice and particularly enjoyed learning about IRS audits and how tax professionals assist clients in both federal and state tax controversies.
Adam Cohen (Management/RM/RE) spent his summer with the local Atlanta start-up, Collective IQ, where he participated in the development of their marketing materials as well as observed their business development efforts.
Cathy Saieh (International Business/Finance)worked with Quantum National Banks in Suwanee, GA, which afforded her cross-functional training. In particular, she felt extremely comfortable helping this bank reach out to the Hispanic community.
Meg Gamble (Marketing) discovered her passion for the marketing efforts at Chick-fil-A's Creative Services Department where she worked on a variety of teams that produce marketing programs for the company. Some of you may already know this because you saw her cameo in the Headline News segment on Chick-fil-A that aired over the summer.
And some students worked here in Athens for groups and organizations they created relationships with during the school year.
Nneka Chidi-Amuta (Economics) continued her employment with the Department of University Housing, serving as a conference host for a various groups who stay in the UGA Resident Halls over the summer.
Matthew Pack (Finance), who works at the Ramsey Student Center during the school year, was promoted to manager. He pursued accreditation in the field of personal training and furthered his goal of personal training as a lifelong career.
Mycla Palmer (Management) interned with the Carl Vinson Institute of Government, which allowed her to serve the State of Georgia through regional development plans. Mycla helped produce plans on variety of on-going projects throughout the state of Georgia, such as the Flint River Basin Plan, a docks and marinas project for Coastal Georgia.
All in all, a meaningful summer for our seniors!
