All proceeds from the sale of the book benefit the non-profit ILA at the Terry College of Business. The book can be bought online at the student developed website www.bearfootanorthbounder.com for $19.99. The book can also be found at the UGA bookstore, the Totally Terry Store, Off Campus Bookstore, Flying Squirrel, and Kinnucans. ILA Receives Portion of SEGUE Grant
This summer, the ILA began a collaboration with the College of Education, the School of Public and International Affairs, the College of Agriculture, and the UGA Office of Service Learning to form a Consortium for Better Teaching and Learning. One focus of the Consortium is assisting and supporting the work of our individual students through the development of service-learning projects at the Classic City Performance Learning Center (CCPLC). The CCPLC is an alternative high school here in Athens designed to assist students who have not been successful in the more traditional high school environment. This summer, the Consortium developed a grant proposal for the Scholarship of Engagement Grants for University Engagement (SEGUE).
The Office for Public Service and Outreach distributes the SEGUE grants each fall and recently notified the Consortium that a grant had been awarded to fund a portion of each of their proposed service-learning projects.
The Leonard Leadership Scholars will be actively participating in this CCPLC program. The Scholars will oversee the construction, opening, marketing, and training of a student staff for a Jittery Joe's Coffee Shop at CCPLC. The project requires working closely with administrators/faculty and students at CCPLC, staff of Jittery Joe's, and members of the community. Once completed, the Jittery Joe's will serve as ongoing training for CCPLC students and fundraising for the school. We are grateful for SEGUE's support of this project and look forward to its successful completion. |

Newest L.E.A.D. Students Master the Ropes Course
As one of two ILA instructors who joined their L.E.A.D. students on the UGA Ropes course this Fall, Mark Huber knows the advantages of learning your comfort zone - and stretching it farther than you ever thought possible. "The ropes course frustrates normal communication and forces students to learn to collaborate," Huber says. "I only wish that everyone could experience it. Everyone should be able to benefit from this personal growth opportunity." Every Fall semester, Huber, along with another ILA instructor Vikki Clawson, bring students of their 4100 classes to take on the challenge of the ropes course, an experience which inevitably teaches students more about themselves than they expected. "The ropes course is so important for students to learn about themselves as leaders," Huber says. "To be an effective leader, you must know yourself and be willing to challenge yourself. The ropes course teaches those lessons." After the course, Clawson and Huber take a class period to discuss and reflect with their students about what they learned about themselves, their classmates, working in teams, and leadership. The ropes course is “Challenge by Choice” but Huber says that he has yet to hear of anyone who regretted participating in the Ropes Course. In fact, both his and Clawson's students thoroughly enjoyed the course and appreciated the leadership lessons they learned.

L.E.A.D. Social at Taco Mac
L.E.A.D. students had a chance to get out and mingle with their fellow students and faculty on October 19th at Taco Mac. It was good food and fun, unwinding with others after hectic class schedules and other deadlines. "Good people, good food and good time," said Mark Weaver. "L.E.A.D. socials are a good place to catch up with old friends." Appetizers were prepared for the all to enjoy and students were invited to play some trivia and mingle with fellow classmates. The social event was fun for all L.E.A.D. students as well as a chance to fulfill their social requirement for the semester. |
