General ILA News

Leadership In General
U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Janet A. Hicks was the guest speaker on April 12 for the spring 2005 installment of the ILA's Leadership LectureMajor General Janet Hicks series. Hicks, who is commanding general of the U.S. Army Signal Center and Fort Gordon in Augusta, Ga., explained her personal views on leadership and answered questions from the audience, which included UGA ROTC cadets, ILA Scholars and students from the L.E.A.D. program. Hicks said the roles and responsibilities of a leader in the Army are much like they are in any other organization. "When it's successful, you didn't do a thing," she said. "When it fails, it's all your fault." The guest lecture was sponsored by the ILA and the UGA Honors Program.

Maximum Impact "The Influential Leader" Conference
Students, faculty and staff from the Michael and Dean with Richt and BowdenTerry College along with special guests of ILA were among the thousands who experienced Maximum Impact's seminar "The Influential Leader," a one-day leadership development event held April 29 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. Terry's Institute for Leadership Advancement was the event's primary sponsor. Dean George Benson delivered opening remarks about the Terry College's emphasis on leadership development to an Atlanta audience of more than 1,200 prior to the beginning of the conference simulcast, which had a total worldwide audience of 70,000.Group with Maxwell

Benson later spoke at a luncheon for 100 VIP guests, including Maximum Impact founder John C. Maxwell and UGA head football coach Mark Richt. In addition to Maxwell and Richt, headliners at the program included Gen. Charles Krulak, vice chairman of MBNA and former U.S. Marine Corps commandant; Bobby Bowden, head football coach at Florida State; Mike "Coach K" Krzyzewski, head basketball coach at Duke University; Horst Schulze, former president of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company; and Gloria Johnson-Goins, chief diversity officer for The Home Depot.

L.E.A.D. Program

Hail and Farewell
GroupThe L.E.A.D. Program held its semi-annual Hail and Farewell Ceremony on April 27, 2005 in the Georgia Museum of Art. Over 40 students received their certificates in front of a large crowd of family, friends, and current L.E.A.D. students. A new class of over 60 students was also welcomed. A reception was held directly after the ceremony where food, drinks, and one very large cake was served.

UGA Alternative Spring Break
L.E.A.D. student Lindsay Macrae (Advertising) participated in UGA's Alternative Spring Break program at Camp Boggy Creek outside of Orlando, Florida. Camp Boggy Creek is a camp for seriously ill children, which caters to children with cancer, spina bifida, Downs syndrome, and several others illnesses. Lindsay was assigned to be a "family pal" to the Larsen family during their stay at the camp. The Larsen's son, Jonah Tae Larsen, is quadraplegic and mute but still maintains the ability of communication. One of the unique and memorable moments for Lindsay was assisting Jonah Tae swim for the very first time. "I learned that just because others communicate differently doesn't mean that they are less of an individual. These children have incredible personalities; they just express them in different ways than I communicate", Lindsay explained. "I believe I walked away with much more than I could have ever physically given to the organization I assisted and it's cause."

Top Five Percent of Class
L.E.A.D. students honored during the April 27 Honors Day Convocation for being in the top five percent of their class in the Terry College of Business were: Jennifer Breithaupt (MIS), Cory Chapman (Accounting), Ben Chu (Risk Management/Insurance), Taylor Cox (Marketing), Michelle Ferguson (Finance), Joseph Kendrick (Management) and Jimmie Spivey (Finance/Real Estate).

Leonard Leadership Scholars Program

Students Receive Kudos
Art NollOn Friday, April 22, Andrew Gendreau (ILA Graduate Assistant) took scholar students David Fischer (Real Estate), Alexa Frost (Marketing), Art Noll (Economics/MIS), Michelle Hassenritter (Real Estate), and Latham Saddler (Economics) to complete their YCLA project at Gilmer County High School. This is a letter we received praising their work:

Dear Chris Cornwell,

My students are so excited about last Friday's seminar. Each of the sessions was presented by a competent, enthusiastic, sincere leader which did much to encourage the students to open up and participate. Andrew did a fine job of keeping everything on track and facilitated the question and answer session in about the best style I have ever witnessed (In 30 years of teaching, I have seen quite a few Q&A sessions)… David set the tone, and Alexa, Art, Michelle and Latham followed through delivering the all important message of servant leadership to a group of eager leaders. Many of the students have contacted me and let me know which activities they plan to deliver to their clubs this week. They are all working on their mission statements and were deeply impressed by the vision and sincerity of the ILA team. Thank you so much for empowering your students to deliver to ours. Like Johnny Appleseed, your programs are cultivating now for a visionary future. The ideas planted will continue to grow for a long time. Please convey our sincere thanks to your department, and if we at Gilmer County High School can ever be of service to you in any manner, do not hesitate to call.

Thanks again for everything,

Lucy Harris, Gilmer County High School
