Communicating Company Values
Lee Lee James, Vice Chairman and Chief Information Officer of Synovus, presented an executive lecture November 17 on the UGA campus in Athens, titled "Leadership and a Great Place to Work," at the invitation of Terry's Institute for Leadership Advancement. James described the challenge of communicating the company's values and ideals to new employees in the midst of Synovus' phenomenal growth. "Clarity about what you're working for creates the confidence and strength needed to reach the top of the mountain," James said. In 2004, Fortune magazine named Columbus-based Synovus one of "America's Most Admired Companies" and also ranked Synovus No. 20 on its list of "The 100 Best Companies To Work For".

Southern Management Association President Chris Riordan, Associate Professor of Management and the Director of the Institute for Leadership Advancement, became the President of the Southern Management Association (SMA) on November 5th, 2004. The SMA is a non-profit professional organization for academics and practitioners in the field of management. Presently, the SMA membership numbers over 1,000 individuals representing more than 200 colleges, universities and business firms in 40 states and several foreign countries. The primary mission of the SMA is to foster the general advancement of research, learning, teaching, and practice in the field of management.

Feldman Winner at SMA
Daniel Feldman, Synovus Chair of Servant Leadership and Director of the Leadership Research Consortium, along with author, Kathleen M. Whitcomb, Associate Professor of Management Science, University of South Carolina, won the Best Paper Award from the Academy of Management Careers Division at the annual meeting of the Southern Management Association in November. Dr. Feldman's paper was entitled "The Effects of Framing Vocational Choices on Young Adults' Sets of Career Options." Using a cross-section of college students in all colleges of a large university, this study explored the ways students are encouraged to approach the career choice process may influence the subsequent amount of career indecision they experience.

Campus Closeup
Jennifer Nash, corporate and community relations manager for the Institute for Leadership Advancement, was the topic of a Campus Closeup in the Nov. 8 issue of "Columns," UGA's faculty/staff newspaper. "I work with companies that are interested in recruiting our students, help prepare students for job interviews and try to match students' interests and talents with different companies," Nash said in the staff profile. "I use our corporate partners to arrange executive speaker panels and classroom speakers. I also work on the institute's Web site, marketing materials, our annual report, newsletter and a speaker series." |

Riordan Appointed to Task Force Chris Riordan has been appointed to serve on a 24 member internal task force appointed by Arnett Mace, Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost. This prominent group has been asked to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the University of Georgia's general education requirements and approaches to student learning. The task force includes faculty members from various UGA schools and colleges; administrators from the Honors Program, student affairs and the libraries; plus two student representatives. This committee will report on the university's intellectual climate and how student's currently learn and should learn and examine whether UGA's general education requirements remain innovative. They are expected to report their findings by late spring or summer of 2005.

LRC Reports Now Available The Leadership Research Consortium (LRC) seeks to stimulate innovative research projects through grants to faculty with expertise in the leadership area. These awards provide funding for consulting/applied research projects addressing topics of interested identified by our Corporate Partners. Each year the LRC awards these grants to faculty from the Terry College of Business by determining the theoretical innovation and methodological rigor of the proposal, the applied nature of research and relationship to leadership, whether the project is broadly defined, the feasibility of the project, and the track record of the faculty member in bringing research projects to closure and to publication. The 2004 LRC Research Reports are now available online and seek to address the latest questions surrounding leadership issues and highlight cutting-edge leadership knowledge. |

Shepherd Visits Scholar's Class James Shepherd, Chairman of the Shepherd Center, recently spoke to Dr. Chris Riordan's ILAD 5100 class, Leading From Within, designed for the senior class of the Leonard Leadership Scholars. Mr. Shepherd discussed the vision, strategy, organizational systems and operational goals for the Shepherd Center. The Shepherd Center is one of the country's leading rehabilitation hospitals for catastrophic brain and spinal injuries. |

Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship
Travis Canova, a 2004 Leonard Leadership Scholar and a senior Honors student at the University of Georgia, is the recipient of the Ambassadorial Scholarship, awarded by the Rotary Foundation. Canova is from Rome, Ga. He is graduating in May 2005 with a dual degree in the BBA/MAcc program in the Terry College of Business and will use the scholarship to pursue a master's degree in international politics at the University of Wales at Aberystwyth. The Graduate School of International Politics, founded in 1919, is the world's first university department of international relations. "Winning the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship is an outstanding achievement for Travis," said David S. Williams, director of the Honors Program. "I am proud of his exemplary record of leadership and scholarship at UGA, and wish him continued success at the University of Wales." |

Pandora Outstanding Senior Leaders Five out of the fifteen 2005 Pandora Outstanding Senior Leaders are Leadership Scholar students. These students have worked throughout their college career to make UGA and the surrounding community a better place. They will be featured in the 2005 Pandora Yearbook. Those students are: David Fischer (MIS), Lindsey Giffin (International Business), Justin Golshir (Finance), Emily Magill (Finance), and Latham Saddler (Economics). |

L.E.A.D. Students in ILAD 4100 Design and Implement Community Service Projects A team, consisting of Charles Myerson (Real Estate), Marissa Roy (Sports Business), Chris Foster (Management), and Jared Hodge (Management), held a charity poker tournament benefiting the United Way of NE Georgia at DT's Down Under on November 20, 2004. Players gave $20 donations, or gave $15 with two canned food items for charity. The first prize was a $200 American Express gift certificate. There were also a number of other donated prizes, including gift cards to Best Buy, Depalmas, Sam's/Wal-mart, and a casino set from Rich's-Macy's. Other sponsors included Papa John's, Chick-fil-a, Coldstone Creamery, Longhorns, Fed Ex, and the Frank Family Foundation. In all, 38 players participated in raising over $600 and collecting 40 items of food for charity.
Paul Aglialoro (Finance/Pre-Dental), Mallory Grebel (Social Work), Nick Addison (Economics), and Linda Liu (Risk Management) selected the Athens Area Child Abuse Prevention Council as their organization to benefit. To raise money the group participated in a "percentage night" at Coldstone Creamery, sold Chick-fil-A calendars, and sold hot chocolate to fans before the Georgia/Georgia Tech football game. Along with raising the money, they were able to provide tickets for all volunteers and families for a Lady Dogs women's basketball game. The lady's game provided support for single mother empowerment, since this is a value the council promotes.
On November 20, 2004, The State Botanical Garden held its 1st annual BotGarden 5K Race. The race was put together by Katie Anderson (Finance), Gavin Beck (Risk Management and Insurance), Laura Byars (Accounting), Leigh Foisy (Public Relations). The group organized the entire race from the t-shirt design to the actual racecourse. The race was sponsored by The Athens Banner-Herald, NSCS, Phi Eta Sigma, and Smoothie King. Jittery Joe's, Depalma's, Inoko Express and AYCON donated prizes for the raffle after the race. Seventy runners came out to support The Garden, and the race raised $860 that directly benefited The Garden's educational programs. L.E.A.D. students both ran and volunteered in the race.
Sheenum Gupta (International Business), Mallory Lucier (Risk Management), Tanya Shakhnovsky (Marketing), and Mark Weaver (Management) spoke to 8th grade students in the area about education and looking towards the future. During their visit, they were able to talk to several classes and have an interactive discussion with the students. The discussions centered around four topics: study habits, extracurricular activities, building good relationships and looking towards the future. This project was designed to help and encourage younger students.
