Packed House for Investment Banking Panel
A standing-room-only crowd of more than 120 students heard panelists Robert Durham (BBA '79), managing director and regional manager with Lehman Brothers; Jessica Ziegler (BBA '01), Ziegler, Durham,  Zalenskifinancial analyst with Houlihan Lokey Howard & Zukin; and Erik Zalenski (BBA '01), an associate in capital markets origination with SunTrust Robinson Humphrey, offer their advice on careers in investment banking on October 5 in Sanford Hall. The panel discussion and Q&A was sponsored by the Banking and Finance Department and the Institute for Leadership Advancement. The panelists discussed the different jobs within the field, realistic expectations for students starting out, as well as suggestions for interviewing and breaking into a career in investment banking. The event is part of the ILA Industry Series, which takes place once a semester, and partners with Terry College departments to feature an executive panel highlighting different career fields.

ILA Holds 2nd Annual Tailgate
The Institute for Leadership Advancement hosted approximately 200 people ILA holds 2nd annual TailgateOctober 9th for the 2nd Annual ILA Tailgate. The event took place on the Brooks Hall Lawn before the Tennessee/Georgia football game. Students, parents, student alumni, corporate partners, faculty and staff were in attendance to enjoy barbecue and pre-game fun.


"Living Leadership" Event
Students, faculty and staff from the Terry College were among the hundreds who attended the "Living Leadership" conference, a one-day leadership development event held Oct. 20 at the Georgia World Congress Center in AtlantaILA staff, scholars & Donald Trump and hosted by Maximum Impact. Terry's Institute for Leadership Advancement was the event's primary sponsor. Dean P. George Benson delivered the opening remarks, telling the audience about the Terry College's emphasis on leadership development and its plans for the future. Headliners at the program included authors John Maxwell, Jim Collins, Ken Blanchard; Larry Bossidy, retired chairman and CEO of Honeywell International; Russell Simmons, entrepreneur and co-founder of Def Jam Records and Rush Productions; Donald Trump, chairman and president of the Trump Organization; and Mikhail Gorbachev, Nobel Peace prize winner and former president of the Soviet Union. The final statistics on the audience size for the day's events included these figures: 1,000 people attended the event live in Atlanta; the simulcast was fed via satellite to 300 sites around the world and viewed by approximately 80,000 people.


Leadership Scholars Program

Scholars Speak At Donor Reception Gala
Justin Golshir (Finance) and Mai-Lise Nguyen (Marketing) spoke about the Leonard Leadership Program to guests at the Terry College Donor Reception Gala. They were joined by 10 scholars in cocktail attire who hosted, mingled, and dined with Terry College's biggest donors at the gala on Oct. 2.

Scholars On Homecoming Court
Ilya Gokhman (Accounting) - sponsored by Honors Program Student Council, Jamie Martin (Marketing) - sponsored by Alpha Omicron Pi and Meredith Wilson (Finance), sponsored by Student Government Association were chosen for the 2004 UGA Homecoming Court.

Scholar Wins SBAA Award
Lindsey L. Giffin (International Business), a senior at the University of Georgia (UGA) is a winner of the Southern Business Administration Association's (SBAA) Student Community Service Award. The award is designed to recognize students for their exceptional achievement in academics and significant contributions to the community. It is presented annually by the SBAA, a coalition of leading business schools throughout the south. "Through this award and the example set by our winners, we hope to encourage and reinforce to students that successful business leaders have a responsibility to the community as well as to their company," said Robert D. Reid, Dean of the College of Business at James Madison University and current SBAA President. Giffin, an honors student and Leonard Leadership Scholar, is active in several projects throughout the Athens area to help underprivileged children. For the past four years, she has served as a mentor through a Clarke County mentoring program. Through her work with Project READY, she was instrumental in organizing UGA Day which teamed high school students with college mentors. A recipient of numerous academic scholarships, Giffin is a member of several honor societies including Alpha Lambda Delta, Beta Gamma Sigma business honor society and Sigma Delta Pi Spanish honor society. As a senior at UGA, she maintains a 4.0 grade point average. Lindsey received her award along with $1,500 at the SBAA's annual meeting November 7-9 in San Antonio. The Southern Business Administration Association (SBAA) is the Southern regional association of collegiate business programs. Its members represent close to 200 colleges and universities.

Scholar Featured On Boston Public Radio
Terry College junior Andrew Dill, a 21-year-old business and political science major who is chairman of the University of Georgia's College Republicans chapter, was a voting monitor in Florida for the election and quoted in Time Magazine 11/1/04. He was among a group of four college students on WBUR-FM's "Young Voter Roundtable" which aired on October 20. UGA's chapter is the largest College Republicans chapter in the country, and Dill served as a delegate from Georgia to the recent Republican Party convention in New York.

Harold Burson Visits Scholars
Earl Leonard brought Harold Burson to campus October 12 to speak to ILA scholars about integrity, diversity, and perseverance in the Public Relations industry. Mr. Burson is the CEO of Burson Marsteller Public Relations firm headquartered in New York. Several scholars accompanied him on a tour of north campus, a meeting with UGA president Michael Adams, and a luncheon before the speech.

4 Nights in October
Scholars from the Class of 2006 participated in mock interviews held by volunteers from Terry's MBA program. Coordinated through the Scholars Program, these video-taped mock interviews prepare scholars for real-world interviews. Interviewers evaluated the scholar's performance and reviewed steps for improvement. Scholars also kept the interview video to see their own performance and target developmental opportunities.

George Juzdan Visits Scholars
George Juzdan, Executive Vice President, Wausau Insurance, spoke to the senior Scholars' ILAD 5100 class on October 21. George led an informational discussion on motivation and managing the performance of others.


L.E.A.D. Certificate Program

Tuition Increase Fight
Mallory Grebel (Social Work), a L.E.A.D. student and SGA Vice President was a prominent leader in the fight to keep tuition from rising. She met with the Governor, Board of Regents, several State Legislators and the Chancellor of the Board of Regents. Mallory also participated with protestors from schools across the state to present Governor Perdue a statewide petition with nearly 35,000 student names asking Perdue to ease budget cuts for the university system.

  • November 6 - Students will be participating in the Alzheimer's Memory Walk for community service project
  • November 18 - Bowling at Showtime Bowl (social event)
  • November 20 - Students may be participating in the Botanical Garden's 5K Race as a community service project.
