Scholarships

The UGA Risk Management and Insurance Program has many scholarships available for students of RMI. These include scholarships given out each semester and end-of-the-year scholarships awarded at the annual Insurance Society Banquet.

Each semester, the RMI Program awards more than $15,000 in scholarships.

Each semester the RMI Program awards more than $15,000 in scholarships to RMI students. The scholarships are sponsored by the Insurance Society and Gamma Iota Sigma. Additional scholarships are sponsored by the Atlanta Chapter of the Risk and Insurance Management Society, Inc. (RIMS).

Please complete the on-line Scholarship Application. Please note that applications are only accepted from the first day of the term up until the announced deadline. Please do not send in applications outside of this time; you will have to apply again during the open application period to be eligible for a scholarship.

Important Notices regarding the semester scholarships:

  1. You must be a member of the Insurance Society to receive a scholarship.
  2. Scholarship awards generally range from $50 to $1000 per winner per semester. To be eligible for a $250 award, you must either be a member of Gamma Iota Sigma or apply for membership in Gamma Iota Sigma prior to the scholarship application deadline date for this semester.
  3. All scholarships awards are subject to final approval by the office of Student Financial Aid before checks are drawn.
  4. All Scholarship recipients must attend the Insurance Society's business meeting for that semester in order to receive the scholarship money. The time and date of the meeting will be posted and announced prior to the meeting.

The ACE Charitable Foundation Scholarships

Through generous support from the ACE Charitable Foundation, we are pleased to award three scholarships each year which are designated as the ACE Charitable Foundation Scholarships. RMI students who are interested in being considered for these scholarships should apply through the RMI Program’s normal scholarship application process. Applications are accepted from the first day of the semester until the announced deadline. These scholarships are generally awarded at the spring meeting of the Insurance Society and Gamma Iota Sigma.

The Don Guin-Lindsey Morden Scholarship

Through a generous donation from Lindsey Morden, we are pleased to announce the Don Guin-Lindsey Morden Scholarship, in honor of Don Guin. Mr. Guin is a 1962 graduate of the UGA RMI program and was a charter member of the Insurance Society. Currently, Mr. Guin is the Senior Vice President, Corporate Treasurer and Chief Legal Officer for Lindsey Morden. The Don Guin-Lindsey Morden Scholarship is a perpetual scholarship that will fund one-half the tuition of a senior RMI major. It is awarded each spring at the UGA Insurance Society Banquet.

The Leverett Excellence Awards

The Leverett Excellence Awards are named after the founder of the UGA Risk Management and Insurance Program, E.J. Leverett. Each year, outstanding graduating seniors are given this honor at the UGA Insurance Society Banquet. The recipients are chosen on the basis of their grades and service to the Risk Management and Insurance area. The funding for the Leverett Excellence Awards are just one of the uses of contributions to the E.J. Leverett Fund.

The Guy C. Brazell, Jr. Scholarship

The Guy C. Brazell, Jr. Scholarship was established in 1993 by his family in memory and recognition of his life-long devotion to the insurance industry. The Scholarship Award is made annually as a grant of full tuition to an in-state University of Georgia rising senior majoring in Risk Management and Insurance in the Terry College of Business. The Scholarship is designated for recognition of a well-rounded student who brings to the profession both academic success and the practical personal skills necessary to promote the industry at the sales and administrative level. The award is presented each spring at the UGA Insurance Society Banquet with the name of the recipient engraved on a permanent plaque.

The Hobbs Group

Through sponsorship from the Hobbs Group, three $1,000 scholarships will be awarded each academic year to students who are majoring in Risk Management and Insurance. Hobbs Group President & CEO, Tom Golub, was the 1997 UGA RMI Outstanding Alumnus. To apply for these scholarships, be sure to fill out the semester scholarship application.

Southern Loss Association Scholarship

Through the sponsorship of the Southern Loss Association, a $1,000 scholarship will be awarded each year at the Insurance Society / Gamma Iota Sigma Spring Banquet to a student majoring in Risk Management and Insurance. To apply for these scholarships, be sure to fill out the semester scholarship application.

The Georgia 1752 Club

Juniors or first-quarter seniors who are majoring in Risk Management and Insurance or Marketing are encouraged to apply for a $1,000 scholarship from the Georgia 1752 Club. Please complete the application, send a resume, description of education and career goals, and a letter of recommendation to:

Angus Robinson Jr. Memorial Foundation Scholarships

The Angus Robinson, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) education foundation established in the memory of Angus Robinson, Jr., who was a leader in the reinsurance industry for nearly 20 years. The Foundation awards scholarships to students of Risk Management, Insurance or Actuarial Science. For more details and to apply you may visit the foundation website.

John T. Lockton Memorial Scholarship

Through the generosity of the Lockton Companies in Kansas City and colleagues of the late John T. Lockton, a $500,000 scholarship fund was established for undergraduate students majoring in risk management or business administration for students with intentions of pursuing risk management and insurance as a career. If selected, a $5,000 scholarship will be awarded. In addition, an opportunity to intern at Lockton Companies will be offered to the student(s) selected for this scholarship. To apply for this scholarship, complete a Spencer full-time scholarship application. Students may download an application directly from their website at www.spencered.org.

The Association of Insurance Compliance Professionals (AICP)

AICP serves the insurance compliance community by promoting relationships, exchanging information, and providing learning opportunities within a dynamic regulatory environment. The AICP is dedicated to promoting regulatory competence and awareness for the improvement of regulatory compliance within the insurance industry. Three (3) $1,000.00 scholarships may be awarded annually for tuition and fees to an accredited educational institution. Scholarships are not renewable; however, a recipient may reapply.

The Atlanta Association of Insurance Professionals (AAIP)

The Atlanta Association of Insurance Professionals (AAIP) invites students to apply for its annual T.M. Alexander Scholarship. AAIP will award a total of $10,000 in scholarship funds in 2006. Students must have a cumulative 3.0 G.P.A. to qualify. AAIP will consider any qualified students for the scholarships. A portion of the available scholarship funds may be reserved for Business or Insurance majors.

Foundation for Agency Management Excellence Scholarship

For the 2007-08 academic year, the Foundation for Agency Management Excellence Scholarship (FAME) will award two $5,000 scholarships to students majoring in RMI.

To qualify for a FAME scholarship a student must have established financial need, maintain a 3.0 GPA, have a declared major in risk management and insurance, and be a full-time student in good standing. FAME's preference will be to award a grant to one junior and one senior, and the junior would be eligible for a grant in his or her senior year if the qualifications continue to be met.

William Duffy Scholarship

William Duffy was an early member of the Atlanta Association of Health Underwriters and a strong promoter of continuing education. Duffy served as one of the instructors for the first Registered Health Underwriter class held by the AAHU in 1984.

The William Duffy Scholarship was established to honor students of risk management from the University of Georgia. William Duffy understood the need for advanced education in the insurance field to help improve the quality of health coverage and the care Americans receive, and the $1,000 scholarship established in his name assists with educating a deserving student in the field of insurance.

The student will be selected using the following criteria for the William Duffy Scholarship:

  • A deserving full-time student
  • Attending the Terry College of Business- Risk Management Major
  • Career interest- Insurance
