Dr. E.J. Leverett, founded UGA's
program in Risk Management and Insurance, where he served on the faculty
for 27 years prior to his retirement in 1992. Following his retirement
from the University he continued to serve as a consultant to numerous
corporations and as a speaker for a variety of conferences and seminars
until his death in 2007.
Dr. Leverett earned a DBA degree from Indiana University, having previously
earned an MBA from the University of North Texas and a BBA degree from
the University of Oklahoma. His many professional honors included numerous
teaching awards, the Outstanding Service Award from UGA's Terry
College of Business, service on the Board of Directors for
the American Risk and Insurance
Association, and membership on the Risk Management Advisory
Board for Institutional Investor. He was the author of more than
100 articles on all aspects of risk management and insurance, with specialties
including insurance agency valuation and perpetuation, the underwriting
cycle, and liability insurance issues.
His vision, hard work, and unbridled enthusiasm helped build the UGA
program to one of the largest undergraduate programs in the United States.
In recognition of his many contributions, alumni and friends established
the E.J. Leverett Fellowship Fund within the University of Georgia Foundation.
This endowment annually funds: the Leverett
Excellence Awards; scholarships for outstanding students;
awards to students who pass CPCU, CLU, and other professional exams; awards
to support meaningful research conducted by faculty and doctoral students;
and travel for students to attend special industry conferences.
