An internship is employment, compensated or not, that gives you practical experience in international activities within a corporation. IB majors who have an internship arrangement involving at least 200 total hours (can be 13-15 hours/week for 15 weeks, 20 hours/week for 10 weeks, or 25 hours/week for 8 weeks) should register for INTB 4800 for the academic semester when the internship is to take place. Work responsibilities must provide substantial experience which contributes meaningfully to one's area of emphasis. To register, one must have successfully completed MARK 3000, MGMT 3000, FINA 3000 and MSIT 3000, and the internship must include substantial responsibilities/assignments related to international business. There are no class meetings with a professor; simply go to your job. INTB 4800 equates to a three (3) credit hour course, which can be taken only once. This course can satisfy the "Major Elective" requirement of the IB major.
Grading is based on an evaluation from the internship supervisor and the completion of an academic paper. Unless otherwise arranged, you will receive a grade of Incomplete (I) for the semester you actually work, and you have the following semester to write and submit an academic paper on the experience (see guidelines). The IB Faculty Director will assign a final grade based upon your paper and your supervisor's evaluation, and the "I" grade you received for the semester you worked will be changed to S or U (Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory). Please allow sufficient time for the grade change to be posted.
To participate, complete and print an Internship Agreement form the semester preceding the one you plan to do your internship (before final exams) and submit it, signed by the potential job supervisor, to Sally Vandiver for Dr. Karahanna's approval. There is a limit of 15 participants per semester, so plan ahead, especially for summer semesters. Make sure a thorough and accurate job description is included with the Agreement form and that the job supervisor knows he/she must provide a performance evaluation at the end of the semester. If approved, you will be informed by e-mail and cleared to register for INTB 4800.
Once working, keep a journal of your major activities and accomplishments. This will help you when writing your final paper. We will send an evaluation form to your supervisor during the last two weeks of the semester. Your supervisor should complete the evaluation and return it directly to International Business Programs as soon as possible.
