About the Department of Finance

The Terry College of Business is proud of the return on investment that its graduates earn in the business world. There is no better arena to learn the value of maximizing an asset than finance. Vital to the success of individual, public, and corporate enterprise, finance is an invaluable discipline for students interested in careers such as business, law, or academic research. The Terry College Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree in Finance delivers an education that cultivates students in an environment where they go on to distinguish themselves as high-performing, team-oriented, leaders in future endeavors.
The Department of Finance curriculum provides students an enhanced understanding of the interdependent disciplines of financial management, financial markets and institutions, and financial planning. This knowledge helps students sharpen their analytical skills, broaden their comprehension of today's markets and develop a foundation for advanced scholarship and research.
Finance majors have a wealth of opportunities to pursue through the Terry College of Business. The in-class, student managed investment fund allows participants to oversee an assigned business sector throughout a 2-year period. The quantitative research, decision-making and pitching of investment choices involved with managing the fund is an excellent springboard for the real world. The numerous study-abroad programs available to finance majors provides the opportunity for increased global understanding of their discipline in different cultural environments such as the UK, Brussels, and China. Additional avenues for students include internships and interdisciplinary certificates with the Institute for Leadership Advancement and the Music Business Program, combining classroom knowledge with cutting-edge, real world experience.
Our faculty has an impressive track record of research and their devotion to academic exploration augments the classroom experience. Faculty in the department have extensive professional experience in the areas of capital markets, corporate finance, international finance and corporate governance. They also serve as editors and publish in prominent academic journals. We want students to benefit from these efforts and gain knowledge of the latest trends in asset pricing, corporate finance, or law and financial economics to develop their understanding of risk and return.
The PhD program in Finance is designed to prepare students for careers in teaching and research at a major university or as financial researchers at major corporations or research agencies. The content of the program consists of a strong foundation in financial and economic theory, and advanced seminars in corporate finance, investments, research methodology, and other topics of interest to the field.
