Designed for beginners, this course provides a strong foundation in the basics of Pro Tools for home recordists and aspiring engineers/producers. The next step is to build a song from scratch using imported loops and samples, while learning the more advanced features of Pro Tools along the way. You’ll learn how to work in Grid mode, use MIDI and instrument tracks with software synthesizers, and learn many of the techniques currently in use in today’s recording studios. A must-attend for those seeking to understand the full potential of Pro Tools.
Learning objectives include:
• Getting Comfortable with your Pro Tools System: Understanding the physical components of the Pro Tools system, such as hard drive compatibility, formatting, and choosing the correct type of drive for Pro Tools.
• Starting a New Session: Choosing the audio file type, sample rate, bit depth, and destination for a Pro Tools session.
• Tracking and Overdubbing: Learning the commands and tools necessary for recording basic tracks, overdubbing and punching in.
• Basic Editing Techniques: How Pro Tools is used to manipulate audio in typical recording situations.
• The Pro Tools Virtual Mixer: Learning to use busses, aux sends, plug-ins and automation for basic mixing.
• The Doormats Session: This section takes you through techniques for editing multi-track drums and fixing bass and guitar tracks.
• Audio Quality Issues: Understanding the basics of A/D conversion, Jitter and clocking issues.
• Using a Click in Pro Tools: Demonstrates different methods for creating a click using Reason Adapted, MIDI tracks, and the Click plug-in.
• Working With Loops: In this section you’ll build a song in Grid mode using imported loops, samples, and prerecorded tracks.
• Working with Vocals: Demonstrates the basics of vocal comping and techniques for enhancing vocal performances.
• Advanced Mixing Techniques: This section covers submixing, using compressors and delay effects, EQ, automation, and general mixing concepts.
Instructor Information and Course Format
Participants are required to provide own laptop and Pro Tools software, as well as, a copy of John Keane's book, The Musicians Guide to Pro Tools: Second Edition, and a 2 gigabyte jump drive.
