Leadership Essentials

The Intersection of Leadership, Culture, and Ethical Decision-Making

Noteworthy Quote: "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times" — Charles Dickens

Program Overview

Leadership does not exist in a vacuum. Leadership requires action, business judgment, integrity, and consistency. Today, more than ever, the current business climate will require such attributes in leaders of all types, and at all levels. This one-day workshop will examine the core concepts of leadership and examine the way leaders, past and present, shape culture and organizational success. Paul Voss will lead a highly interactive discussion on what some of the greatest thinkers in history (Aristotle, Plato, Socrates, Dante, Shakespeare) said about leadership, and how their insights relate to leadership today. Participants will examine the five levels of thinking and relating — and the five possible ways we can demonstrate leadership. Participants will also be asked to debate Machiavelli's famous question: "Is it better to be loved or feared?"

How will this benefit you and your organization?

Participants will return to work with a better understanding of the difference between leadership and managing, and why both are important. Voss will provide a proven framework for understanding the intersection of leadership and ethical decision-making. Participants will come away with not only a clear vocabulary for discussing leadership and ethical issues, but they will also understand their own leadership style and consider ways to move from low-level behaviors (when they are not at their best) to higher levels (when they are at their best) that will impact the organization in profound ways.

What topics are covered?

The morning session will make the distinction between civilization (those attributes that make life and work possible) and culture (those characteristics that make life and work worthwhile) while exploring the nine attributes of a healthy culture. We will also examine what some of the greatest thinkers in history (Aristotle, Plato, Socrates, Dante, Shakespeare) said about leadership. Participants will then examine the five levels of thinking and relating — and the five possible ways we can demonstrate leadership.

The afternoon session moves from the imaginative to the real, from the hypothetical to the concrete. Participants will first examine a number of actual ethical issues facing businesses represented in the workshop and look at solutions to the various dilemmas suggested. Program participants then will consider how they would react to these situations from various levels of thinking — from the lowest form of behavior (survivalist) to the highest form of leadership (transformational).
