Educating Athens musicians about the legal and business components of the music industry! A joint endeavor by the UGA Law School and MBUS program.

 

This year's event features three panels:

3:30 p.m. Legal Careers in Entertainment
Moderator: Professor Shipley
Panelists: John Seay, Liz Wheeler, Shawn Nolan and more TBA! Entertainment attorneys from firms (both big and small) and other
institutions will discuss important aspects of the current legal climate for the music industry.

4:30 p.m. The Business of Music
Moderator: Bertis Downs (lawyer and advisor to R.E.M.)
Panelists: John Strohm, Peniece LeGall (SEASAC), Alyssa DeHayes (Team Clermont Publicity), and more TBA
How do artists make money in the digital age? Discussion topics will include digital streaming, the decline of album sales, licensing,
recent changes in record labels and record deals.

5:45 p.m. The Artists Panel: Writing, Recording and Touring
Moderator: David Barbe (artist, producer, director of the UGA Music Business Program)
Panelists: Patterson Hood (Drive-By Truckers), Dottie Alexander (of Montreal), Ryan Engelberger (Reptar), Dawson Morris (manager, Dead
Confederate) and Julian Dorio (The Whigs)

Some of the most successful Athens musicians will discuss their careers, and how to turn your band from a hobby into a profession. How did Reptar go from house party band to festival headliner? How did The Whigs get on Letterman and Leno? How does of Montreal tour with such a huge stages setup? How did Dead Confed land a supporting slot with Kings of Leon? Do the Truckers maker more money on ticket sales or merch? We'll learn all this and more!
