This month’s topic on the Qualifying Investor Tax Credit should be relevant to startups that may want to help their investors take advantage of this credit or investors looking to use it in a deal. The Qualifying Investor Tax Credit, or “Angel Investment Credit,” is designed to incentivize investors to fund early-stage businesses in Georgia. This year, the Georgia General Assembly extended the credit through 2017. This discussion will cover the details of the tax credit, its value to both businesses and their investors, and how to get certified and claim credits. About the presenter: Jeff Weinkle, CPA is a tax manager at Habif, Arogeti & Wynne, LLP. He specializes in state and local taxation and has seven years of experience in tax planning and compliance for business entities. Jeff has authored articles on state tax incentives and legislation. In addition, he manages the Domestic-International Sales Corporation export incentive practice. Jeff earned a BBA in economics from the University of Georgia in 2007.

UPS delivers packages each business day for 1.5 million shipping customers to 7.9 million receivers in over 220 countries and territories. In 2014, UPS delivered 4.6 billion packages with total revenue of $58.2 billion. As VP of Tax, Don is responsible for the world-wide tax function at UPS. This includes all aspects of US domestic and international tax risk, compliance, planning and tax accounting. Don joined UPS in 1997 as the Director of Tax Controversy, handling IRS Audits, Appeals and Litigation for the Company. He has also worked as Director of Tax Research and Planning handling tax strategic planning for operations as well as mergers and acquisition tax structuring and diligence. Prior to joining the UPS Tax Department in 1997, Don practiced law in Atlanta with the firm Chamberlain Hrdlicka and was responsible for representing companies and individuals in federal and state tax disputes at IRS Appeals, US Tax Court, and US Federal District Courts. Don received his degree in Accounting from Mississippi State University in 1987, his law degree from Emory University Law School in 1990, and an LLM (Masters in Tax Law) from New York University Law School in 1992.
