Dr. Carol Peden MB ChB, MD (Res), FRCA, FFICM, FFMLM, MPH is a Professor of Anesthesiology and Executive Director of the Center for Heath System Innovation at the University of Southern California. Previously Carol was Associate Medical Director for Clinical Quality for NHS England and Consultant in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at the Royal United Hospitals, Bath, UK. In 2016 Carol was named Public Health Innovator of the year by the Harvard T. Chan School of Public Health for her work using quality improvement to improve outcomes for high risk surgical patients. Carol gained her quality improvement (QI) expertise as a Fellow at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI). She has led and taught on QI projects nationally and internationally and developed improvement and leadership courses for major Universities. Carol is an author of multiple papers, national standards and two books. She is the 2016 Ellis Gillespie Professor of the Australia and New Zealand College of Anesthestists, 2014 Macintosh Professor of the Royal College of Anaesthetists UK, and was awarded their Humphry Davy Medal in 2013. Her research interests include improving clinical outcomes, incident reporting and communication in healthcare, perioperative medicine, innovation and digital technology, and developing safer clinical systems. Dr. Peden has a medical degree and research doctorate in medicine from the University of Edinburgh and has an MPH in Clinical Effectiveness from Harvard University.
