Graduate Study in Economics

The PhD degree in Economics prepares students to be scholars of economics. It is a necessary credential for a career of teaching and research in colleges and universities, as well as for many positions in government and consulting in the private sector. The level of rigor and difficulty of all PhD programs is substantially greater than that of the undergraduate degree. While the economics curriculum at UGA provides a solid foundation for graduate study in economics, the department recommends that students interested in the PhD go beyond the courses required of the BBA or AB degrees. In particular, they should excel in calculus, linear algebra, and statistics, and should be willing to take additional math coursework if feasible. Our ECON 4750 course - Introduction to Econometrics - is highly beneficial for future economics graduate students. We also encourage Honors students interested in pursuing the PhD in Economics to consider enrolling in our joint AB-MA program, which is aimed at providing a firm foundation for graduate study in Economics.

For additional information about PhD programs in Economics, feel free to contact any of the faculty members in the department, including the Graduate Coordinator. We also invite you to consider our PhD program in Economics; detailed information is available from our "Graduate Programs" link.
