The Department's PhD program provides in-depth, rigorous training in economic theory and econometrics and prepares students for careers in research, teaching and consulting in academia, private industry and government. The program offers fields of specialization in econometrics, industrial organization, international economics, monetary/macro economics, public economics and labor economics. Specific information about the PhD program can be found through the links to the left.
The Department does not admit students into a stand-alone master's program. Only PhD students who discontinue work toward their doctorate are eligible to pursue the MA as a terminal degree. In addition, highly motivated undergraduate UGA students can earn an MA degree through our Bachelor's/Master's Program, offered in cooperation with the Honors Program.
The Economics Department is strongly committed to training its graduate students to be high quality teachers. This commitment to excellence enhances the job market opportunities of graduate students and ensures that undergraduates receive outstanding instruction. The Department provides Ph.D. students with many opportunities for instructional training and feedback. The primary principle on which the Department's policies are based is that teaching responsibilities should be balanced with sufficient progress towards completing the degree.
