Academic Information

AB Economics No Longer a High-Demand Major

IMPORTANT: The AB Economics major offered through the Franklin College will not be considered high demand beginning Spring 2008. Therefore, students interested in this major do not need to apply for admission or take the Terry MAPP test. Any student satisfying the following criteria will be admitted into the AB Economics degree program:

  1. Completion of core areas A-E;
  2. 2.0 cumulative UGA GPA;
  3. 2.0 overall GPA;
  4. Completion of ECON 2105 and ECON 2106 with a grade of 'C' (2.0) or better in each.

Summer/Fall 2008 Advising:

Advising is now on a walk-in basis. Please drop by 539 Brooks Hall between the following hours:
Monday - Thursday, 9–11 am and 2–4 pm.

Exceptions:
Tuesday, April 29 – no morning walk-in hours
Thursday, May 8 – no walk-in hours
Wednesday, May 14 – no morning walk-in hours
Monday, May 26 — no walk-in hours

If the walk-in hours are inconvenient, please contact the academic advisor.

Marketing Classes Available to BBA Economics majors in Summer 2008

MARK 4210 (Professional Selling) is open to all Terry majors this summer and will meet during first session, 10:30 am–12:45 pm daily.

MARK 4600 (Integrated Marketing and Brand Communication) is open to all Terry majors this summer and will meet during maymester, 11:00 am–1:45 pm daily.

Terry Classes in Fall 2008

Some courses in other departments (MARK, FINA, REAL, etc.) will open to BBA economics majors on April 15 assuming that seats are remaining and those seats are not expected to be used by majors. BBA economics majors interested in taking MARK 4000 should contact Laura Richardson in the Marketing Dept.

UGA Music Business Program

The UGA Music Business Program is now accepting applications for Fall 2008. Interested students should be able to commit to 21 hours, have at least a 2.8 GPA, complete the application and submit an official transcript.

Internships and Job Opportunities

American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Entry Point! Program

The Entry Point! program offers outstanding paid, 10-week internships and semester co-ops in major companies through the United States, including NASA, IBN, NOAA, Merck, and Lockheed Martin. The program is available to students with disabilities majoring in economics.

Interested students must be full-time undergraduate or graduate students, have 3.0 GPA or higher, and be a US citizen.

Capital Semester Programs at Georgetown University

These programs are sponsored by The Fund for American Studies in partnership with Georgetown University. Substantive internships are combined with courses for academic credit, career development activities, and exclusive briefings and lectures led by prominent policy experts. Students will stay in furnished, private residential buildings on Capital Hill and will take 12 credit hours in political science and economics at Georgetown University. Over half of all students receive full or partial funding based on merit and financial need.

Applications for Fall 2008 are due June 1. (March 1 for 5% discount on tuition) Applications for Spring 2009 are due November 1. (October 1 for 5% discount on tuition)

Federal Reserve Economic Analyst Position

The Federal Reserve currently has an open "economic analyst" position with our finance group in Atlanta. The job primarily involves assisting economists with research projects and working with economists on FOMC briefings (pulling data, making charts, etc.) It's an excellent opportunity for top economics students graduating this spring who have some curiosity about the profession and are potentially considering a PhD program in 2-3 years.

Federal Reserve Research Assistant Positions

The Federal Reserve Board in Washington DC is looking for graduating seniors interested in working at the Board for about two years before returning to graduate or professional school for additional training. Students interested in applying should have undergraduate training in mathematical statistics, econometrics, or both, as well as good computer skills. Coursework in money and banking (or monetary economics), finance or international trade theory is also useful. A background in mathematics can replace the need for finance coursework.

US Department of Housing and Urban Development — Field Economist Opening

This position is located in the Economic and Market Analysis section of the Field/Regional Office of the Department of Housing and Urban Development under the direction of Policy Development and Research Office of Economic Affairs. This is an opportunity for a two-year training program under the Federal Career Intern Program. Upon successful completion of the career-internship, the intern will be eligible for non-competitive conversion to a permanent appointment. This position is open to graduating AB and BBA economics majors. The closing date is May 9.
