ECON 4150 (Environmental Economics) in Fall 2009
Environmental Economics will be taught by Caroline Sandifer in Fall 2009. This class covers the economic foundations of global environmental problems, including air and water pollution and the depletion of natural resources, with discussions of alternative (command and market-based) solutions.
ECON 4710 (Topics in Economic History) in Fall 2009
"The Economics of America's Great Depression" will be taught by George Selgin in Fall 2009. The prerequisite for this course is ECON 4010.
Course Description: Much of modern macroeconomic thought and policy can be traced to the Great Depression of the 1930s — the most severe depression in modern history. This course reviews economic arguments concerning the causes and consequences of that depression, with particular emphasis on U.S. experience. Particular emphasis is place upon employing concepts and theories learned in intermediate macroeconomics (and also in money and banking or monetary classes) toward a better understanding of this crucial episode in economic history.
ECON 4710 (Topics in Economic History) in Spring 2010
"The First Industrial Revolution" will be taught by George Selgin in Spring 2010. The prerequisite for this course is ECON 4010. Students may take two ECON 4710 courses for academic credit.
Course Description: This class examines Great Britain's "Industrial Revolution" — the rapid changes to Great Britain's economy starting in the mid-18th century that led to its becoming the world's first industrialized nation. Topics to be explored will include the role played by population growth and the enclosure movement; technological developments in agriculture, transportation, and industry; monetary conditions and the role of banks; the influence of government policies; and the effects of the industrial revolution on labor conditions as well as on general living standards.

EPID 4200 (Global Health) in Fall 2009
The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics is offering a 3 hr. course on the epidemiological aspects of global health problems. EPID 4200 is an introductory overview of the public health systems as they currently exist and operate in other countries, with an emphasis on core functions of public health. Classes will concentrate on a specific country surveying a broad range of public health problems facing that country and exploring of a variety of possible solutions. Anil Mangla will teach the course on Fridays, 9:05am - 12:05pm. This course will count as a general elective or free elective for Terry economics majors and an upper-level elective for Franklin economics majors.
HACE 3110 (Money Skills for Life) in Fall 2009
This one-hour course reviews practical money skills that college students need as they enter the world of work. It will cover basic budgeting, credit management, making decisions about employer provided health care, and savings and investments, especially employer provided options. The emphasis will be on preparing the students to make decisions as they leave college and begin employment. This course is only open to students with senior standing and will be graded on an A-F scale. This course may count as a free elective for Terry economics majors and an upper-level elective for Franklin economics majors.
London School of Economics Summer Program
Students can get transfer credit in Accounting, Economics, Finance, Law, International Relations, and Management in three week courses taught within two sessions. Students are allowed to take one course per session. Economics majors can receive major credit for some of the 200-level and 300-level economics courses.

UGA Music Business Program
The UGA Music Business Program is now accepting applications. Interested students should be able to commit to 21 hours, have at least a 2.8 GPA, complete the application and submit an official transcript.

Vanderbilt Law School PhD/JD program
This is a new program which includes fellowship support that covers both tuition and stipend is available for both the PhD and JD portions of the program.

Scholarship and Financial Aid Information
25th Anniversary Study, Work, and Travel Abroad Fair $2,500 Scholarship Competition
Two winners will be chosen on the basis of an essay on the theme "25 Years On: Why International Education Is More Important Than Ever." Awards may be used toward any UGA international program for credit which is participating in the Fall 09 study abroad fair.

Franklin College Scholarships
The Franklin College of Arts and Sciences has information on four scholarships for Arts & Sciences students. The deadline to apply for these scholarships is May 1.

Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Scholarship Program
Undergraduates or recent graduates can apply for this program. Students must have at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA, plan to begin first graduate degree program in the coming fall, and be nominated by his or her undergraduate institution. UGA can nominate up to 2 individuals each year. Interested students should contact the academic advisor.

Ty Cobb Scholarship
Undergraduate students who are residents of Georgia, have demonstrated financial need, and have completed at least 30 semester or 45 quarter hours of academic credits with an average of "B" or higher in an accredited college or university are eligible to apply for Ty Cobb scholarships. Students with higher academic averages and the greatest financial need will be given priority.

Internships and Job Opportunities
American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Entry Point! Program
The Entry Point! program offers outstanding paid, 10-week internships and semester co-ops in major companies through the United States, including NASA, IBN, NOAA, Merck, and Lockheed Martin. The program is available to students with disabilities majoring in economics.
Interested students must be full-time undergraduate or graduate students, have 3.0 GPA or higher, and be a US citizen.

Brookings Institute Internship
This unpaid internship is offered by the metropolitan policy program. Junior and senior economics majors with a strong quantitative background and an interest in urban policy are encouraged to apply. Interns will have the opportunity to participate in substantive and independent research in several diverse areas of urban policy, including but not limited to: market and demographic trends, metropolitan growth and development trends, planning and land use issues, transportation, economic development, neighborhood markets, and working family policies.

Capital Semester Programs at Georgetown University
These programs are sponsored by The Fund for American Studies in partnership with Georgetown University. Substantive internships are combined with courses for academic credit, career development activities, and exclusive briefings and lectures led by prominent policy experts. Students will stay in furnished, private residential buildings on Capital Hill and will take 12 credit hours in political science and economics at Georgetown University. Over half of all students receive full or partial funding based on merit and financial need.
Fall 2009 dates will be August 29 - December 12, 2009.
Spring 2010 dates will be January 13 - May 1, 2010.
Fall 2010 dates will be August 28 - December 11, 2010.

Council for Quality Growth
This not-for-profit trade association is offering fall, spring and summer internships to dedicated individuals interested in real world applications of public policy development. Interns will be expected to research various public policy issues affecting the agency, write articles for newsletters, and assist regular staff with formulating public policies affecting their members. If course credit (ECON 4800) is involved, the faculty advisor will need to contact the office. It is possible to work around your class schedule.

Federal Reserve Research Assistant Positions
The Federal Reserve Board in Washington DC is looking for graduating seniors interested in working at the Board for about two years before returning to graduate or professional school for additional training. Students interested in applying should have undergraduate training in mathematical statistics, econometrics, or both, as well as good computer skills. Coursework in money and banking (or monetary economics), finance or international trade theory is also useful. A background in mathematics can replace the need for finance coursework.

The Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation is now accepting applications for the Fall 2009 internship program. The program dates are September 14 to December 4, 2009. Interns will earn $12/hour. Applications are due August 21.

RTI Economist Job Position in Atlanta
The Health, Social and Economics Research Division of RTI International has an opening for an Economist 1. This position requires a background in research as well as a strong academic record; a minimum of a 3.5 GPA is required, transcripts will be requested. The Economist 1 must be highly organized, have excellent communication and time management skills and the ability to multitask. Applicants should have quantitative research experience or coursework in applied economics and be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.

UGA Washington Semester Program
The Washington Semester Program is accepting applications for Fall 2009. The program is open to undergraduate students in all majors who are at least juniors with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Economics majors who participate intern a minimum of 30 hours per week, take two classes in Washington and have the opportunity to earn internship elective (ECON 4800) and/or major required (ECON 4200 or ECON 5990) credit.
Spring 2010 dates will be January 6 - April 24, 2010. (Priority deadline - Sept. 15)
