As part of its mission, the University of Georgia "endeavors to prepare the university community and the state for full participation in the global society of the 21st century." The Department of Economics plays a vital role in this mission in two important ways. For students interested in business careers, economics is an essential foundation for business education. Similarly, when it's viewed in the broader sense of a liberal arts education, economics is a core discipline and an integral part of a well-rounded course of study.

On Wednesday, February 18, the Economics Society is sponsored a panel discussion of the recently passed stimulus plan, with Professors Bill Lastrapes (Economics), Greg Trandel (Economics) and Robert Grafstein (Political Science) serving as the panelists. A lot has happened since our October 8 panel, held in the wake of the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy. Since then, the US government and the Federal Reserve have undertaken a series of historic actions in addition to the passage of the stimulus package, including bailouts of the banking and automobile industries. And, now there is widespread talk of nationalizing the major banks.
