MINUTES
TERRY STAFF REPRESENTATIVE GROUP
December 14th, 2005

The Terry College of Business Staff Representative Group met Wednesday, December 14th, 2005 at 9:00 am in Brooks Hall, Room 327.

Members present: Cindy Daniel (Undergraduate Program Office), Betty Pharr (Dean's Office and OIT), Sheila King (Assoc. Dean for Faculty and Research), Sally Vandiver (IB), Tony Stringer for (Development, Alumni Relations and Special Events), Marsha Dickerson (ACCT), Connie Autry (MARK), Marsha Richmond (ILSRE), D onna Sisk (MBA), Joanna Warren (ECON), Ruth Davis (MGMT), Stan Johnson (Logistics), Regina Lagarino (ILA), Lesley Jones (FINA), Elaine Merrell (Marketing and Communications), Ashley Young (Business Office).

Members absent: Ian Armit (Selig Center), Cynthia Huff (MIS), Elizabeth Wiley (Executive Programs and EMBA).

The meeting was called to order by Ashley Young. There were no corrections to the minutes of the last meeting.

Ashley Young discussed the Staff Council meeting. She said that there were several minor administrative issues voted on and approved for the bylaws. The one that she could remember was that minutes must be distributed within four days after a meeting rather than the current seven.

The UGA wide listserv issues were discussed. There are problems with constant abuse by certain people using the "for sale list". The administrators of the list wanted to be able to have the ability to remove inappropriate posts.

University Council Representation was discussed. University council has many faculty and student members but only one staff member. For several years, the Staff Council has tried to establish equal representation of staff to no avail. The imbalance has never been placed on the agenda. The staff may need to have faculty petition on our behalf. The current strategy is to find out which faculty members represent the Terry College and speak to them about this inequity, stating that staff might want them to "go to bat" for them if they cannot get on the agenda for the next University Council meeting.

Below are the current faculty members of the Terry College on the University Council.

Zinkhan, George Terry College of Business 2007
Vandenberg, Robert Terry College of Business 2006
Shedd, Peter Terry College of Business 2007
Feldman, Daniel Terry College of Business 2008
Bamber, Michael Terry College of Business 2006
Amason, Allen Terry College of Business 2006

An appeal was voiced about Bryan Rice, a former UGA employee who has a spinal injury. They are looking for people to donate time to make his house handicap accessible.

The SRG members who are on the staff website committee are going to meet in January for suggestions for the SRG website which should be updated in February. SRG as a whole will not be meeting in January.

Ashley pointed out that she is still accepting donations for the skate park as the Dean's gift from staff. Toys for Tots has no box yet, but toys are being taken to Logistics. Eight - eleven is the tough age group. The current deadline is December 16th.

The staff questionnaire results where announced. Representatives either wanted everything to remain the same or all had different opinions on the questions. A quick rundown of the results are as follows:

  1. Monthly meetings are the best way to disperse information.
  2. A sign up list should be passed for food. Two people should share the responsibility for each month and be reimbursed through the Business Office.
  3. There was a mixed opinion of if the SRG president should be the Staff Council representative. Many people thought it should be two separate people.
  4. Departmental SRG reps should disperse information to their units in any way that works for them; meetings, e-mail and SRG web site.
  5. If an SRG rep doesn't attend ? meetings, the department head will be contacted. (not confirmed at this time)
Ashley announced that she will be returning to school and we will need a new SRG president beginning in January to serve through June. Nominations should be sent to Cindy Daniel.

According to SRG bylaws, the Dean is supposed to meet with the full staff once a semester. SRG is supposed to facilitate this meeting. Since he has not met with the staff this year, a meeting will need to be set up for Spring semester.

The SRG bylaws need to be from "Minutes will be taken and distributed from each meting to all staff" to "Minutes will be taken and distributed to all SRG members". Also, a few minimal changes were made to the Terry College units portion of the SRG website.

In new news, $2172.00 was collected for Karen and David Rutledge (Karen was a former employee who just retired) to help with the care of their son who has been diagnosed with a brain tumor.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:50.
